Massimiliano Allegri Prepares for Chaotic Serie A Season

Massimiliano Allegri is bracing for a Serie A season he expects to be chaos at the top – and he loves the look of it.

The Napoli head coach, speaking ahead of the 2026-27 campaign, painted a picture of a title race packed with contenders, insisting the Scudetto fight will stretch well beyond the usual suspects.

“Inter are the favourites because they hold the trophy,” he told Sportmediaset, making it clear that Simone Inzaghi’s side remain the standard. But he didn’t stop there. “There will be at least eight teams to keep an eye on. As well as the Nerazzurri and ourselves, also Milan, Juventus, Roma, Fiorentina, Como and Atalanta.”

Eight clubs, one title. Allegri sees a league with no room to breathe.

Centenary weight and a brutal calendar

For Napoli, the stakes are higher than usual. This is the club’s centenary, and Allegri knows exactly what that means in a city that lives off its football. The season is not just about keeping pace with Inter; it’s about writing a page that will be remembered for decades.

“It’ll be a beautiful and demanding year,” he said, fully aware of the workload piling up. Napoli must juggle Serie A, a revamped Champions League format and the Coppa Italia. No competition can be treated lightly, not this year.

“We’ll have to be good at staying in it in Serie A, the Champions League and the Coppa Italia,” he stressed. The European mission is clear in his mind: “In the Champions League, however, we need to get through the single group stage and then reach the playoffs or the round of 16 as best we can.”

There is no talk of easing into the new format. Allegri wants his side deep into the knockout rounds.

Buongiorno blow tests Napoli’s depth

The optimism is real, but so is the first major setback. At the back, Napoli have lost Alessandro Buongiorno to a long-term injury, a serious dent in Allegri’s defensive plans just as the season takes shape.

“It’s a shame about Buongiorno, who will be out until January,” he admitted. The timing is brutal, but the coach moved quickly to underline the options still at his disposal.

“In any case I have Marin and Rrahmani, Beukema is behind but he’ll recover his best form, and if needed I also have Olivera. I’m confident.”

No panic, no hint of lowering expectations. Instead, a clear message to the dressing room: the standard does not drop because one pillar is missing.

Hojlund under the spotlight

Up front, the focus narrows on one man. Rasmus Hojlund carries the responsibility of leading Napoli’s attack, and Allegri has not shied away from placing him in elite company in the past, even likening aspects of his game to Harry Kane.

That comparison, though, comes with a warning label. Promise is no longer enough.

“He’s a very physical striker, he puts in the effort and is eager,” Allegri said, offering praise before drawing a line in the sand. “But he needs to improve his goal-scoring record this season. He can do so given that he has all the potential.”

The message is blunt: in a league race with Inter, Milan, Juventus, Roma, Fiorentina, Como and Atalanta all circling, potential won’t win Napoli anything. Goals will.

Allegri has thrown down the gauntlet – to his striker, to his patched-up defence, and to a league he believes is on the verge of its fiercest title battle in years.
