Martin Sherif Charged by FA Over Betting Breaches

Everton forward Martin Sherif has been charged by the Football Association over alleged breaches of betting regulations spanning a 15-month period.

The 20-year-old is accused of placing 61 bets on football matches between 20 November 2024 and 12 February 2026. He has been given until Monday, 17 August to respond to the charge.

“Martin Sherif of Everton FC has been charged with breaching the FA's betting rules,” the FA said in a statement. “It's alleged that the player breached FA Rule E1.2 in respect of 61 bets placed on football matches between 20 November 2024 and 12 February 2026. Martin Sherif has until Monday 17 August to provide a response.”

The case places a highly rated young forward under an unwelcome spotlight at a key stage of his career.

Rising prospect under scrutiny

Born in Liberia, Sherif joined Everton’s academy in 2019 and worked his way through the youth ranks before stepping up to train with the first team in early 2025. His progress had marked him out as one to watch at Goodison Park.

To accelerate his development, Everton sent him on loan to League One last season. Sherif joined Rotherham United in the summer, scoring twice in 10 appearances before injuries cut that spell short and led to his recall in December.

He returned to the third tier in February, this time with Port Vale for the rest of the campaign. Sherif again found the net twice, this time across 17 League One games, as Vale slid to relegation.

Now his next challenge is not on the pitch but in front of the authorities, with his response to the FA charge set to shape the next chapter of a career that had been steadily gathering pace.
