Marshall Defeats VCU 3-1: A Comeback Victory
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall took a punch, then took over.
Down a goal inside seven minutes, the No. 15 Thundering Herd roared back with three unanswered strikes to beat VCU 3-1 on Sunday night at Hoops Family Field, stretching their unbeaten start to 2-0-2.
Early mistake, early punishment
Marshall handed VCU the perfect start. A loose moment at the back left Ty Johnson clean through on goal, and the Rams forward showed no hesitation, lifting the ball over goalkeeper Yurij Obert before tapping it over the line for a 1-0 lead in the seventh minute.
On the touchline, Chris Grassie saw a familiar story for a team still learning each other’s movements.
"We have a lot of new players. I think it takes time to gel and get the things we need," the Marshall head coach said. "The way we pass balls is our communication. We make actions on the field, we move in a certain motion. We're always communicating with our teammates around us and I think that communication has moments of pure clarity and moments of confusion. I think we have to ride this out. There's a very good team in there somewhere, but we have to go through the rigors to make sure we gel and get our communication spot on."
His players responded.
Apolinario ignites the comeback
Eight minutes after falling behind, Marshall found its spark from distance.
Goncalo Machado slid a pass into space for Thiago Apolinario, who needed no second invitation. From nearly 40 yards out, the midfielder unleashed a driven effort that caught VCU goalkeeper Manuel Monteiro off guard. The ball flew in, Apolinario’s third goal of the season, and suddenly the Herd were level at 1-1.
VCU refused to shrink. The Rams carved out chances through the rest of the half, asking repeated questions of the Marshall back line. Each time, Obert had the answer. His best stop before the break came in the 31st minute, a sharp save that preserved the 1-1 scoreline heading into halftime.
Roberto flips the script
The restart brought a different Marshall.
Just under five minutes into the second half, the Herd seized control. A loose ball fell to Joao Roberto just outside the 18-yard box. One touch, then a clean strike past Monteiro, and Marshall had turned the game on its head at 2-1 in the 50th minute.
Now playing with a lead, the Herd leaned on Obert again. The goalkeeper produced another key stop in the 59th minute as VCU pushed for an equalizer, then stood tall once more in the 85th to guard the slender advantage.
Each save tightened the grip on the match.
Romberg slams the door
As VCU chased the game late, their own mistake finished them off.
In the 90th minute, a Rams error left Carl Romberg through on goal. The Marshall attacker stayed composed, buried his chance, and sealed the 3-1 victory for MU, capping a night that began with anxiety and ended with authority.

Marshall remains at Hoops Family Field on Friday, hosting Utah Valley at 7:15 p.m., with the unbeaten run intact and the sense that, as Grassie suggested, an even better team is still taking shape.
