Manchester United U19s Dominate Sabah FK 5–0 in Youth League Opener
Manchester United’s youngsters tore into their UEFA Youth League campaign on Thursday afternoon, dismantling Sabah FK 5–0 at Leigh Sports Village in a one-sided contest that could easily have turned into a cricket score.
With the competition mirroring the senior team’s Champions League group stage, United’s U19s — overseen by the club’s U21s manager for this tournament — wasted no time announcing themselves.
Flying start
The first punch landed almost immediately. Barely two minutes had passed when Jim Thwaites whipped in a wicked free-kick from wide on the left. The delivery skimmed towards the near post, where captain Amir Ibragimov darted across his marker and turned the ball home. Sabah were stunned; United were just getting started.
JJ Gabriel nearly doubled the advantage moments later. Picking up the ball on the edge of the box, he unleashed a fierce drive that looked destined for the top corner until the Sabah goalkeeper flung himself up to tip it over.
Sabah spent long stretches trapped in their own half, clinging on as red shirts swarmed around them. Their only real outlet came through the relentless running of Shahin Ibrahimov, who repeatedly tried to break away on the counter, only to find himself isolated and outnumbered.
The pressure finally broke them again in the 16th minute. Bendito Mantato’s cross skipped all the way across the penalty area, evading everyone in blue but not Jacob Watson. Arriving at the far side, Watson met it sweetly with his weaker right foot and drilled United’s second into the net.
United’s dominance came at a small cost. Making his first start of the season, Godwill Kukonki rolled his ankle and had to be withdrawn on 20 minutes, with Rafe McCormack sent on in his place.
Just before the interval, the scoreline began to reflect the performance. Junior Brown saw his effort blocked in a crowded box, but the loose ball fell kindly for Gabriel. He reacted quickest, pouncing and firing in to make it 3–0 on the stroke of half-time.
Relentless control
The second half brought no respite for Sabah. United kept their foot down, moving the ball with confidence and attacking from all angles. Brown almost produced the goal of the game when he cut inside from the left and curled a beautiful effort towards the top-right corner, only for the Sabah keeper to claw it away with another outstanding save.
For a while, it felt like that third goal before the break might be enough. United kept creating, Sabah kept scrambling, and the score somehow stayed the same. Then Gabriel took charge.
With five minutes of normal time left, the forward collected the ball inside the box, shifted it cleverly past his marker and passed a calm finish into the far-right corner. Precision over power. 4–0, and the gulf between the sides laid bare.
Two minutes later, Gabriel completed his hat-trick in style. Thwaites, already influential from set-pieces, split the Sabah backline with a superb through ball. Gabriel timed his run perfectly, surged in behind and slotted home to seal a dominant 5–0 victory.
The numbers told the story as clearly as the scoreline. United racked up 44 attempts on goal. Sabah failed to register a single effort against Cameron Byrne-Hughes.
