Manchester United Targets Mateus Fernandes as £85m Move Gains Momentum

Manchester United have turned the page on Elliot Anderson. Now the spotlight is on Mateus Fernandes – and the pace around his future is quickening.

INEOS, driving United’s recruitment strategy, have stepped away from any notion of paying the £120–130 million being quoted for Anderson. Nottingham Forest’s valuation has closed that door. United’s attention has swung instead to Fernandes, the 21-year-old West Ham United midfielder whose stock has risen sharply despite the club’s relegation to the Championship.

United change lanes – and fix on Fernandes

The shift in strategy was laid bare early on June 11. Tyrone Marshall, Chief Manchester United correspondent for the Manchester Evening News, wrote on X at 7:59am:

“Manchester United unwilling to pay £120million for Elliot Anderson and won’t be drawn into a bidding war. They want players who want to join them and, as it stands, they are focusing on other targets, with Mateus Fernandes at the top of the list #mufc”

That last line matters. Fernandes isn’t just on a shortlist. He is at the top of it.

From there, the story has gathered speed. Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that United have already moved beyond simple admiration and are now in direct talks with the player’s camp.

On his YouTube channel, Romano stated that Manchester United are “in official contact with the agent of the player” and have “already started the conversation with the agent to start preparing a bid to West Ham.”

The message is clear: this is not tentative interest. United are preparing an offer.

A crowded field for a rising Portugal international

United are not alone. Far from it.

Romano has underlined that “more clubs” are in the frame, name-checking Real Madrid among the suitors. TalkSPORT’s Ben Jacobs has gone further, mapping out the breadth of the competition and the scale of West Ham’s demands.

Posting on X at 3:43pm on June 11, Jacobs wrote:

“Movement expected on Mateus Fernandes’ future this month. Manchester United already in talks on the player side. PSG and Arsenal also hold appreciation. Real Madrid the latest suitor to make contact. West Ham want double the £38m+£4m they paid, but despite this valuation a sale is expected.”

West Ham’s stance is uncompromising. Romano reported on June 8 that the London club have fixed Fernandes’ price at £85m after a meeting with his camp. That figure, roughly double their initial outlay of £38m plus £4m in add-ons, sets the terms of engagement for any club hoping to prise him away.

For United, the number is high but not outlandish in the context of a 21-year-old Portugal international with elite clubs circling and a long runway of development ahead.

Fernandes keen on Old Trafford – and a familiar face

The deal has another important ingredient: the player’s own preference.

TEAMtalk reported on May 14 that Fernandes is “extremely keen” on a move to Manchester United. The appeal is obvious. Old Trafford, a leading role in a rebuilding project, and the chance to line up alongside his Portugal international teammate Bruno Fernandes.

That last detail could matter when negotiations tighten. United already have an agreement in place with Atalanta for Ederson Silva, signalling a clear attempt to reshape and refresh their midfield. Dropping Mateus Fernandes into that mix would accelerate the transformation and tilt the balance of the squad towards a more dynamic, technically secure core.

The attraction runs both ways. Fernandes is understood to “fancy” the idea of playing with Bruno, a potential on-pitch partnership that offers United creativity, control and a shared footballing language at the heart of the team.

An £85m test of United’s new era

All roads now lead to the same question: how far are United prepared to go?

They have drawn a line under the Anderson pursuit on price grounds. They have made contact with Fernandes’ camp and are preparing a bid. West Ham want £85m and, according to both Romano and Jacobs, expect to sell.

PSG admire him. Arsenal admire him. Real Madrid have made contact. United are already in talks on the player side and, crucially, appear to have the player’s enthusiasm.

The race is set. If INEOS want to signal that this new era at Old Trafford comes with sharper decisions and a clearer vision, Mateus Fernandes looks like the first major test of that promise.
