Manchester United Target Felix Nmecha as Future Casemiro Replacement
Manchester United’s search for the next anchor of their midfield has taken them somewhere very familiar – back to Manchester, via Dortmund and the World Cup.
Felix Nmecha, once a promising academy talent at Manchester City and now a standout for Germany at this World Cup, has emerged as a serious name on United’s recruitment list as they plan for life after Casemiro.
From City prospect to World Cup standout
Nmecha’s rise has not been straightforward, but it has been emphatic.
Let go by City and rebuilt at Wolfsburg before earning his move to Borussia Dortmund in 2023, the 25-year-old has used this World Cup to underline why so many clubs are now circling. His performance in Germany’s 7-1 demolition of Curacao turned heads: a crisp, first-time right-footed strike from around 20 yards arrowed into the top corner to open the scoring, the kind of finish that lingers in a scout’s mind.
The goal was the headline moment. The full performance was the real story. Nmecha covered ground relentlessly, drove from box to box and repeatedly shut down Curacao counterattacks, showing the blend of physicality, discipline and attacking timing that top clubs crave in modern central midfielders.
United, who have been tracking him since at least February, see those traits as the makings of an ideal Casemiro replacement – someone who can protect the back line, but also step into the final third with conviction.
Manchester calling again
Reports in Germany, including from Sky Sports Deutschland, say United are firmly in the race for Nmecha. They are not alone.
Across town, Manchester City have also been credited with an interest in bringing back a player who came through their own system before leaving for Wolfsburg in 2021 after an eye-catching loan spell at Anderlecht. That subplot adds an extra twist: the prospect of a former City youngster potentially returning to Manchester, but in red rather than blue, will not go unnoticed.
On the continent, Real Madrid are also believed to be in the frame, with returning manager Jose Mourinho understood to be an admirer. For a midfielder who only truly established himself at the top level in recent seasons, the list of suitors is already elite.
Dortmund hold the cards
There is, however, a hard reality for any club hoping to prise Nmecha away quickly: Borussia Dortmund are in control.
The Bundesliga side have him tied down on a contract until 2030. Buried in that deal is a release clause that becomes active in the summer of 2027, set at around £61m. Dortmund are said to be relaxed about his situation and are planning for him to stay at least until that window, expecting that any move is more likely during that clause period than in the current market.
Nmecha’s camp is striking a similar tone. Speaking to Bild, his agent Tobi Alabi made it clear there is no push to force a move.
“Felix still has two years left on his contract, and we fully respect that. Borussia Dortmund have played an important role in his development,” Alabi said, stressing the player’s gratitude for the trust and platform provided in Germany.
He pointed to Nmecha’s steady improvement season by season and acknowledged that interest is an inevitable consequence of strong performances, but he drew a line under any immediate exit talk.
“Right now, the focus is very clear: Felix is determined to give everything for Borussia Dortmund, to fight for the club and to help the team achieve its goals,” he added.
For United, that means admiration from afar rather than an imminent raid, unless Dortmund’s stance softens or a huge offer lands on the table.
United’s midfield rebuild gathers pace
The pursuit of Nmecha comes as part of a broader reshaping of United’s midfield. Casemiro’s future has been under scrutiny, and the club have already moved decisively for one reinforcement.
They are on the verge of confirming the £39m signing of Brazil international Ederson from Atalanta, with the midfielder expected to complete his medical while on World Cup duty. His arrival would add dynamism and aggression to the engine room, but United know one signing will not solve everything.
The profile they see in Nmecha – athletic, tactically sharp, comfortable both breaking play and initiating attacks – fits the direction they are trying to move in. Whether they can turn admiration into action, given Dortmund’s contract position and the interest from City and Real Madrid, is another matter entirely.
For now, Nmecha’s focus stays on Dortmund and the World Cup. United’s focus, quietly, is on whether this former City youngster could yet become the cornerstone of their post-Casemiro era.
