Marc Cucurella's Exciting Debut with Real Madrid
Marc Cucurella finally pulled on a Real Madrid shirt in anger – and you could see what it meant to him.
The Spanish defender made his first appearance for Los Blancos in their pre-season win over Schalke 04 at the Veltins-Arena in Gelsenkirchen, stepping off the bench in the 61st minute to bank his first minutes of the summer. It was only a friendly on paper. For him, it felt like a line in his career being underlined.
This was the night the waiting stopped.
Cucurella has been edging towards this moment all pre-season, training, travelling, watching, but not yet involved. Here, with Madrid polishing off their preparations before the League campaign begins, he finally joined the action and helped see out a positive result that capped their summer work.
After the final whistle, the relief and joy poured out of him.
“I am very happy,” he told Realmadrid TV, the smile almost audible. “I think it was a great match for everyone and a great result before starting the League. These were my first minutes, and I’m very eager. The wait was long, but now, little by little, I’m getting into rhythm and looking forward to starting the League.”
The debut may have been short, but the road to it has been anything but. Years of graft, loans, and battles for minutes have brought him to one of the most demanding dressing rooms in world football. He knows it.
“I am very happy. Behind all this, there is a lot of work, and all the effort I’ve put in over the years has been worth it. I’m very happy with everything that’s happening to me, and I hope it continues this way – winning titles and, above all, being able to enjoy this experience.”
His introduction in Germany gave him a first taste of the pace, the combinations, the responsibility that comes with that white shirt. He admitted those early touches felt easier thanks to the players around him.
“Very good. I think with these teammates, everything is easier,” he said. “These were the first minutes of the season, and little by little, I’m finding my rhythm, and soon the real competition begins.”
That “real competition” is never far away at Real Madrid. Places are scarce, standards are unforgiving. For a new signing, the first task is to belong. Cucurella was quick to highlight how the squad have helped him do exactly that.
“They are really good people. I think they make it very easy for everyone to adapt,” he explained. “The important thing is to have a good group so that it shows on the field that we are united. That’s how you win.”
The message is clear: harmony in the dressing room, trophies on the pitch. He wants to contribute to both.
Off the field, the welcome has stretched far beyond Valdebebas. Cucurella has felt the pull of the fanbase already, even before a competitive debut at the Bernabéu.
“I’ve received many messages, and I will always try to give my best in every minute I have,” he said. “I think the most important thing, and what we all want, is to win titles with this jersey.”
One pre-season outing in Gelsenkirchen will not define his Madrid career. It does something else. It plants a flag. The long wait is over; the real fight for a place in this team starts now.
