Manchester United's Predicted XI Against Fulham: Key Updates and Insights
Michael Carrick did his best to sound calm on Friday, but the stakes were written all over his team news.
Two defeats on the bounce at Old Trafford – one to a 10-man Manchester City in the league, another after blowing a two-goal lead to Brighton in the Carabao Cup – have turned Sunday’s trip to Fulham into something far more than a routine away day. For Manchester United, 16:30 at Craven Cottage suddenly feels like a line in the sand.
Carrick has brushed off what he called “ridiculous” rumours about his future, yet the mood around Carrington is blunt: he needs a win before the international break, or the noise will only grow louder.
Shaw and Baleba racing the clock
The United head coach did at least have some cautiously positive news on the injury front. Luke Shaw and Carlos Baleba are edging closer to returns, with both in contention for the squad against Fulham.
“A chance for both of them. Not totally 100% on either,” Carrick said, adding that Shaw’s situation is “really short-term” and that the full-back is “just working towards the game.”
The key line was between the words. Shaw and Baleba might travel, but neither looks ready to be thrown straight into a game of this magnitude from the first whistle. That shapes everything.
At left-back, that almost certainly means another opportunity for Patrick Dorgu. His derby display against City was shaky, but with Harry Amass not viewed as a realistic starter here, Carrick appears ready to back the Dane to respond rather than rip up the plan.
On the opposite flank, the picture is no clearer but just as telling. Noussair Mazraoui and Diogo Dalot have both struggled for form in recent outings, and Carrick is unlikely to risk the balance of his back four by fielding them together. Dalot, though, remains the senior option and is expected to keep his place at right-back.
Between them, the centre-back pairing should revert to experience. Ayden Heaven and Leny Yoro failed to convince in midweek, and with the pressure rising, Carrick is expected to turn back to Harry Maguire and Lisandro Martinez to restore some authority at the heart of the defence.
Midfield loyalty and a teenager’s rise
If the back line looks like a reset to trusted names, midfield feels more like continuity with a twist.
Andrey Santos did not take his chance against Brighton and is set to drop to the bench. That opens the door again for Kobbie Mainoo to resume his growing partnership with Youri Tielemans. With Baleba not fully ready to start, Tielemans remains the anchor in Carrick’s plans, the man charged with knitting United’s play together in the middle of the park.
Ahead of them, there is no debate. Bruno Fernandes will return to his familiar No.10 role, the captain once more asked to drag his side through a difficult moment.
The real intrigue comes on the right wing. Shea Lacey, still a teenager, was United’s standout performer in the Carabao Cup defeat and has forced his way into the conversation. Carrick has rarely been shy about trusting youth, and Lacey’s sharpness and fearlessness on Wednesday have put him in pole position to start at Craven Cottage.
If Lacey gets the nod wide on the right, the dominoes fall further up the pitch.
Mbeumo through the middle, Rashford under threat
Bryan Mbeumo, used across the front line, could be redeployed as a central striker. That would spell trouble for Benjamin Sesko, who has yet to find his rhythm and is expected to make way after an ineffective spell leading the line.
On the left, Matheu Cunha and Marcus Rashford are locked in a straight fight. Rashford has started two matches in four days and has not found top gear in either. With Carrick under pressure to inject energy and edge into his attack, Cunha has a genuine chance of edging the England international out of the XI, at least from the start.
It all points to a side that leans on senior figures in defence and midfield, but carries a bolder, fresher look in the final third. A blend of responsibility and risk.
