Manchester United's Midfield Rebuild Hits Snag with Fernandes Signing

Manchester United’s midfield rebuild has hit its first major snag of the window. Mateus Fernandes is heading to Tottenham, not Old Trafford, and the ripple effect could drag United into one of the most complicated transfer pursuits in Europe: Aurelien Tchouaméni.

Spurs land Fernandes, United left recalculating

United had tracked Fernandes closely, holding talks as they explored a deal with West Ham. The Portugal international had become one of the Premier League’s standout young midfielders last season, shining in a struggling West Ham side with his calm use of the ball, progressive passing and ability to surge through the middle third.

That profile fit neatly into United’s plan to reshape the centre of the pitch, especially after the arrival of Ederson from Atalanta. Fernandes looked like the next piece.

Then Tottenham moved decisively.

Spurs agreed to meet West Ham’s £85 million valuation with a guaranteed fee, winning the race for a player coveted across Europe. For United, it was a clear message: hesitate for a moment in this market, and someone else will close the deal.

So the search moves on. And at the very top of the wish list, one name refuses to go away.

Tchouaméni: the dream that doesn’t quite add up

Inside Old Trafford, Aurelien Tchouaméni is viewed as a dream signing. Not a luxury. A statement.

The France international has grown into one of Europe’s premier holding midfielders since joining Real Madrid from Monaco in 2022. Nearly 140 appearances later, he has helped anchor a side competing relentlessly for La Liga and the Champions League, starting some of the biggest games on the calendar and looking entirely at home.

He shields the back four, snaps into tackles, cuts out counters and then sets attacks in motion with simple, assured distribution. At 26, he already feels like a finished article, yet still has years in front of him. For France, he has become a regular presence at major tournaments, reinforcing his status as one of the most complete defensive midfielders in the game.

That is exactly why United “love the player,” as transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano put it. And exactly why the deal is so difficult.

Romano laid out the obstacles bluntly. The financials are “still too high.” Not just the fee Real Madrid would command for a key first-team player, but Tchouaméni’s salary as well. United, wrestling with their own financial parameters and squad structure, cannot simply drop a blank cheque on the table.

The only way to “open doors,” Romano stressed, would be to negotiate a completely different salary package with the player. That is a significant ask for someone established at a club of Madrid’s stature, on a contract that reflects his importance.

Real Madrid, for their part, feel no obvious pressure to sell. Tchouaméni is embedded in Carlo Ancelotti’s plans, part of a midfield group that has been carefully assembled and refreshed. Any club trying to prise him away would need to satisfy both Madrid and the player, at a price and wage level that currently sit beyond what United consider realistic.

A statement or a stalemate?

This is the tension now facing Michael Carrick and the recruitment team. Missed out on Fernandes. Admire Tchouaméni. Stuck in the middle.

Should United somehow carve out a route to a deal, Tchouaméni would instantly transform the feel of their midfield. He would give Carrick a true defensive anchor: someone who can patrol space in front of the defence, break up attacks early and allow more creative players to operate higher with less fear of what’s behind them.

It would be more than a signing. It would be a declaration that United can still go head-to-head for elite talent at the peak of their powers, not just prospects or stopgaps.

For now, though, it remains an aspiration rather than a negotiation on the brink of completion. United will continue to monitor the market, weighing up alternatives while keeping a watchful eye on any shift in Tchouaméni’s situation or expectations.

The dream is clear. The question is whether they can bend the numbers – and the player’s will – enough to turn it into something more than that.
