Rodri Explains Why He Chose Barcelona Over Real Madrid

Rodrigo Hernández, the current Ballon d'Or winner, has officially signed with Barcelona, committing his future to the Catalan club until 2030. After leaving Manchester City, where he collected 13 titles, Rodri revealed why he turned down other offers, including one from Real Madrid, to join Barcelona.

Why Barcelona Was Always His First Choice

During his official presentation, Rodri explained that although he had a significant offer from Real Madrid, moving to the Spotify Camp Nou was always his priority this summer. He expressed deep gratitude toward Manchester City for everything they gave him and appreciated their support in facilitating his exit.

"Barcelona have always been a global benchmark for me, for their way of understanding football and their values. It is true that I had another proposal, but Barca were the first option and I told the board that," Rodri said.

Ready to Play and Excited About the Future

Rodri also addressed concerns about his fitness after recent back surgery, clarifying it was a minor outpatient procedure. He assured fans he is fully fit and ready to take the field immediately.

The midfielder showed enthusiasm about playing alongside young star Lamine Yamal, praising the teenager’s rapid development and impressive performances. Additionally, Rodri spoke highly of new coach Hansi Flick and his bold tactical ideas, hoping to use his experience to guide a youthful squad aiming to win the Champions League.

Upcoming Debut and Training

Rodri is set to train with his new teammates to get up to speed quickly. Barcelona will present him officially to supporters during their traditional Joan Gamper Trophy match against Egyptian side Al Ahly, held tomorrow evening at the Spotify Camp Nou as the team prepares for the new season.
