Manchester United Faces Manchester City in Crucial Derby
Manchester United go into this afternoon’s derby at Old Trafford knowing exactly what is at stake. Beat Manchester City, and a stuttering Premier League campaign suddenly looks very different.
Michael Carrick has not been shy with his rotation this week. The 4-0 dismantling of Sabah in the Champions League on Thursday allowed him to rest key figures, and now the big guns are back.
The one exception is Luke Shaw. Rested in midweek, his absence today confirms the injury fears that had been swirling. He is the only senior name not recalled.
Defence reshaped for derby test
Senne Lammens keeps his place in goal, trusted again on the biggest domestic stage.
In front of him, Diogo Dalot and Harry Maguire return to the back line, joining Lisandro Martinez and Patrick Dorgu. Martinez and Dorgu both played the bulk of the 90 minutes against the Azerbaijani side but are asked to go again, a clear sign of Carrick’s faith in their form and resilience.
Nous Mazraoui and Leny Yoro, starters in Europe, drop to the bench. Matthijs de Ligt remains unavailable as he continues his recovery from back surgery, still not ready to be thrown into the intensity of a Manchester derby.
Mainoo–Tielemans axis stays, Rashford recalled
The core of United’s midfield stays untouched. Kobbie Mainoo and Youri Tielemans continue together in the double pivot, a pairing Carrick has leaned on to give structure and control. Ahead of them, Bruno Fernandes again operates in the number 10 role, the creative hub expected to knit United’s attacks.
Out wide, there is a significant boost. Marcus Rashford returns to the starting XI on the left, a decision that instantly adds pace and direct threat in behind City’s defence. On the right, Bryan Mbeumo starts, with Amad still sidelined as he works his way back from a hamstring injury.
Through the middle, Carrick sticks with Matheus Cunha as a false nine. It is a bold call. Ben Sesko, who has scored in his last two games, drops to the bench despite that form. The message is clear: Cunha’s movement and link play are central to the game plan.

Karl Darlow provides cover as the substitute goalkeeper.
Mazraoui and Yoro offer defensive alternatives, while Ayden Heaven and Shea Lacey add youthful depth. Mason Mount and Andrey Santos give Carrick different midfield profiles if the game state shifts.
