Manchester United Seek Luke Shaw's Return After Derby Defeat
Manchester United return to Old Trafford tonight with bruises still fresh and tempers not quite cooled. A 1-0 derby defeat to Manchester City, settled by a contentious Erling Haaland winner that United feel should never have stood, has left Michael Carrick’s side under pressure as Brighton visit in the Carabao Cup.
This tie offers a reset. It also offers something United have badly missed: Luke Shaw.
Shaw and De Ligt near long-awaited returns
Shaw is edging towards a comeback and United hope this is the night he finally reappears. The left-back has been absent during a shaky start to the season, and his return would immediately change the balance of Carrick’s back line. If he’s passed fit, he is expected to get at least some minutes, even if not from the first whistle.
He is not the only defensive boost on the horizon. Matthijs de Ligt is also closing in on a return after being sidelined since November with a back problem. The Dutchman’s absence has been felt sharply. United’s defence has looked porous in the opening weeks of the campaign, and the lack of his presence and authority has been obvious.
Tonight might come too soon for De Ligt to start, but his name creeping back into the conversation is significant.
Rotation on Carrick’s mind
With a league trip to Fulham looming on Sunday and a three-week international break following it, Carrick is expected to shuffle his pack.
Senne Lammens is likely to make way in goal, with Karl Darlow in line to start between the posts. At right-back, Diogo Dalot’s uneasy display against City has opened the door for Noussair Mazraoui to come in and stake his claim.
Lisandro Martinez and Harry Maguire have been Carrick’s trusted pairing at centre-back, but this is a cup tie that lends itself to rotation. Both could be handed a breather, with Leny Yoro and Ayden Heaven ready to step into the spotlight. If Shaw is deemed ready, he should see time at left-back, with Patrick Dorgu then pushed further up the pitch.
Dorgu’s role and wide options
Dorgu, a Denmark international, may be used as an out-and-out winger in Carrick’s preferred 4-2-3-1, which would allow Marcus Rashford to sit this one out and recharge. On the opposite flank, injuries have complicated the picture.
Amad Diallo’s ankle problem leaves United light on the right wing. That could force Bryan Mbeumo into the starting XI again, even if Carrick might have preferred to rest him. Youngster Shea Lacey is another option if the manager decides to gamble on youth and energy under the lights.
Midfield balance and Bruno’s grip on No10
In midfield, Kobbie Mainoo and Youri Tielemans have emerged as Carrick’s go-to double pivot. Their blend of control and passing range has given United a clearer structure, but this competition offers room to tweak.
Andrey Santos is pushing for minutes and may finally get a longer look here, especially with Carlos Baleba still sidelined by an ankle issue of his own after arriving in the summer. The engine room could be where Carrick experiments most, without completely dismantling his core.
Ahead of them, Bruno Fernandes is expected to keep his place as the No10. He remains the creative reference point and on-pitch leader, even in a cup tie. Mason Mount, an unused substitute in the derby, stands by as an alternative if Carrick decides Bruno’s workload needs trimming.
United need a response. They need a performance. And they could really do with seeing Shaw stride back onto the Old Trafford turf, signalling that the defensive frailty of the early season might finally start to ease.
