Manchester United vs Ipswich Town: Carrick Seeks Strong Response

Manchester United walk into their second Premier League game of the season already under pressure. A 2-0 defeat on the opening day has done that.

Hull City, fresh from the playoffs, made United look like the side feeling their way into the division. Michael Carrick cannot afford a repeat. Not at Old Trafford. Not against newly-promoted Ipswich Town.

The squad will look familiar. The performance cannot.

Baleba arrives, but may have to wait

Since that bruising afternoon against Hull, United have moved in the market. Carlos Baleba has arrived from Brighton and Hove Albion, finally giving Carrick a natural defensive midfielder to anchor his system.

On paper, he’s exactly what United have been missing. On the pitch, though, he might not be seen just yet.

Baleba suffered ankle ligament damage during Brighton’s pre-season. The expectation is that he returns to full fitness before the end of September, with individual training pencilled in before then. The projected target is clear: Saturday, 10 October, against Tottenham Hotspur.

Ipswich may come too soon.

Amad ruled out after training setback

Amad will not be the spark to change things this weekend.

He missed the Hull game despite featuring in United’s final pre-season outing against AC Milan. Roundtable understands he is facing up to six weeks out after picking up an injury in training.

His likely return date is also set for Saturday, 10 October, at home to Tottenham. Until then, Carrick’s wide options remain that bit thinner, his bench that bit less explosive.

Mount edging back into the frame

There is better news with Mason Mount.

The midfielder limped out before the 20-minute mark against Paris Saint-Germain after a knock to the foot. He walked out of the stadium without a limp, but the caution that followed was obvious: no minutes against Leeds United, AC Milan or Hull City.

He was considered “touch and go” for the Hull fixture. Now, Sam Cohen reports that Mount has trained with the first-team squad ahead of Ipswich Town’s visit.

His potential return date is set for Sunday, 30 August, against Ipswich. If Carrick wants more control, more energy between the lines, Mount’s availability changes the mood.

De Ligt’s long road continues

At the back, one of United’s biggest names remains on the long road back.

Matthijs de Ligt has not played since suffering a back injury in November 2025. At the time, Rúben Amorim suggested he might only be out for a week. The reality has been far harsher.

De Ligt has now been seen training with the first-team squad. Early steps, nothing more. Back injuries demand patience, and United know it.

A realistic target is late October. Until then, Carrick must work with what he has.

Same squad, different standards

Strip it all back and the picture is simple: the group available against Ipswich Town will look very similar to the one that faltered against Hull City.

Carrick will not accept a similar display.

Ipswich arrive with the momentum and freedom of a promoted side. United arrive with questions to answer and a fanbase demanding a reaction. The personnel might not change much – the intensity, the structure and the attitude will have to.

If they don’t, this season’s story could turn uncomfortable very quickly.
