Manchester United vs Ipswich: Mount Returns as Carrick Seeks Response
Old Trafford expects a reaction. Manchester United return home on Sunday still stinging from a limp 2-0 defeat at Hull on the opening weekend, a performance that raised more questions than answers about Michael Carrick’s new season blueprint.
The attack barely flickered. The tempo sagged. Creativity vanished. Ipswich arrive next, and United cannot afford a repeat.
Mount’s Return Changes the Picture
There is at least one clear lift for Carrick. Mason Mount is back in contention after returning to training this week, having recovered from the ankle injury he picked up against Paris Saint-Germain in pre-season.
He is unlikely to be rushed straight into the XI after weeks out, but simply having him available matters. United looked flat and short of ideas at Hull; Mount offers movement, pressing, and a passing range that can stitch attacks together.
Carrick came through that defeat without any fresh injuries, a small but important victory after a disrupted summer. Mount is the headline boost, yet he is not the only attacking spark pushing for a bigger role.
Marcus Rashford is driving hard for a start. Used only from the bench in the opener, he is the obvious candidate to inject pace and direct running into a forward line that never truly stretched Hull.
If Rashford comes in, Patrick Dorgu is the most likely to make way. That would leave Bryan Mbeumo and Bruno Fernandes operating behind Matheus Cunha, who again looks set to lead the line. Benjamin Sesko is still working back from a shin problem, so Cunha’s place as central striker appears secure for now.
Midfield Under the Microscope
The real scrutiny, though, sits in the middle of the pitch. Kobbie Mainoo is pushing hard for a recall after watching Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos struggle to impose themselves in that opening loss.
Carrick needs more control and more bite in midfield. Mainoo can offer both. The likeliest tweak sees him come in alongside Tielemans, with Fernandes released higher up the pitch where his risk-taking and final ball can hurt Ipswich rather than leave United exposed.
Behind them, options remain tight. Injuries continue to narrow Carrick’s choices at the back, limiting how much he can reshuffle his defensive unit even if he wanted to send a message after Hull.
Baleba on Ice, Injury List Still Bites
One player the home crowd will not see yet is Carlos Baleba. The £70 million summer signing from Brighton arrived carrying an ankle ligament injury sustained during a pre-season training camp in Austria. The club expect him to be out for “two or three weeks”, delaying his debut and any immediate shake-up he might have brought to the midfield pecking order.
Amad Diallo is also sidelined for “a little bit longer”, while Tom Heaton, Matthijs de Ligt and Manuel Ugarte remain unavailable. Carrick must find a response with what he has, not what is still to come.
