Manchester United Faces Injury Crisis Ahead of Ipswich Clash
Manchester United’s bid to shake off their miserable start to the Premier League season will have to come without a raft of first‑team options, as both they and Ipswich Town count the cost of early‑campaign injuries.
Nine players in total are set to miss the Old Trafford clash, stripping depth from two squads heading into a game that already carries a sharp edge.
United stretched as Carrick hunts a response
Michael Carrick’s side were booed into the tunnel after a limp 2-0 defeat to Hull City on opening weekend, a result that underlined just how fragile United look despite a summer of heavy spending. Hull had been widely tipped for a relegation fight. Instead, they walked away from Old Trafford with a statement win and left United scrambling for answers.
United have since pushed through a £70million move for Carlos Baleba from Brighton and Hove Albion, a transfer designed to give their midfield more power and control. He will not be the one to steady them on Saturday.
Carrick confirmed the club’s new signing is carrying an ankle issue and will not be rushed into action.
"He's got a little ankle issue, so maybe a couple of weeks or so, three weeks. We knew that before. It's no major issue. It'll be great to have him back," the United boss said, making it clear Baleba is one for the next stretch of games, not this one.
The injury list doesn’t stop there.
Amad Diallo will also miss out, the winger still sidelined after picking up a minor injury in training. He was absent for the Hull defeat and will not feature this weekend either.
"Amad won't be involved, he'll be out for a little bit longer," Carrick confirmed, removing another attacking option from his bench.
Mason Mount is not yet ready to return to competitive action, though there is at least a hint of optimism around his situation. The midfielder has rejoined training and is edging towards a comeback.
"Mase is back around the group, he trained this week, so a real positive," Carrick said, but he will not be risked against Ipswich.
At the back, long-term absentee Matthijs De Ligt remains unavailable. The Dutch defender has been out for an extended period but is now training again and building towards full fitness.
"Matta's obviously been out for a long period of time. But he's training and it's great to have him back. He won't be involved, but he's in good shape and moving in a good direction, so that's a good bonus for us really, at this stage, to have him back," Carrick explained.
Even the goalkeeping department has taken a hit. Veteran backup Tom Heaton, injured in a pre-season friendly against PSG, is still out. Carrick has not put a date on his return, leaving United light on experienced cover between the posts.
So United go into a pressure fixture with key players missing, a marquee signing unavailable and the memory of Hull’s win still hanging over Old Trafford.
Ipswich arrive with belief – and their own problems
Across the technical area, Gary O’Neil brings an Ipswich side that has already ripped up one script. Written off as heavy underdogs on the opening day, they stunned Sunderland with a composed, disciplined victory to launch their campaign in style.
They travel to Old Trafford with momentum, but not with a clean bill of health.
Four Ipswich players are ruled out. Jaden Philogene, who missed the Sunderland win, remains sidelined by an ankle problem. Florentino Luis is also unavailable, the midfielder nursing a calf injury that kept him out of last weekend’s game.
Azor Matusiwa, another absentee from the opening fixture, will sit out again due to a thigh complaint, stripping Ipswich of yet more midfield bite. Jack Taylor stays on the treatment table as well, his knee injury still preventing him from featuring in the Premier League so far.
O’Neil’s squad, like Carrick’s, is being tested early. The difference is mood: Ipswich arrive with a win and a sense of opportunity; United arrive wounded, under scrutiny, and short of bodies.
Old Trafford has seen plenty of early-season tension before. With nine players missing between the two clubs and United already chasing a response, this one feels like it will say more about character than about team sheets.
