What began as a statement performance from Lyon turned sour in the stands before the interval, as a fiery Ligue 1 clash with Rennes was interrupted by serious crowd trouble and an ugly banner aimed at Saint-Etienne.
For 40 minutes, the football did the talking. Lyon tore into Rennes with the conviction of a side sensing an early-season surge. Ernest Nuamah, electric and ruthless, struck twice to put Paulo Fonseca’s team 2-0 up and in complete control of a meeting between direct European rivals.
