Lothar Matthäus hails Bayern’s “chapeau” handling of Musiala health scare
Jamal Musiala is back on the training pitch at Bayern Munich, but the story behind his absence has cut far deeper than a routine injury update.
The Germany international twice collapsed during pre-season friendlies, first against RB Leipzig and then 1. FC Heidenheim, and had to be substituted on both occasions. He later revealed he had been suffering from “absences”, a neurological dysfunction. He has not played for Bayern since.
Only after those worrying scenes did the full picture emerge publicly. Inside the club, though, the situation had been known for months.
According to Lothar Matthäus, that silence was no accident.

Speaking on Sky90, the Bayern and Germany legend underlined just how impressed he has been with the way the club protected Musiala.
“The very biggest thing I have experienced at Bayern Munich was the name Jamal Musiala,” Matthäus said. He went on to stress that this was not a secret confined to a tiny circle.
“People at the club have known for six, seven, eight months. But it is not only the president and the doctor who know. The whole team know. And nothing has come out. That shows the togetherness. Not only on the pitch, but off it as well.”
In an era when medical details and dressing-room whispers often leak within hours, Bayern’s ability to shield one of their brightest stars struck Matthäus as exceptional. The club had already confirmed they had been aware of Musiala’s illness for some time and that the collapses were linked to a change in medication.
For Matthäus, the discretion and unity around such a sensitive issue deserved more than a polite nod.
“Huge respect for dealing with such a topic so properly and in such a united way. All I can say is: chapeau to Bayern Munich,” he said.
Musiala back in training, but competitive return uncertain
The 21-year-old is now training again with Bayern as he works his way back towards full match fitness. The next step, the real one, will be a return to competitive action.
Whether Vincent Kompany is ready to take that step as early as Wednesday remains open. Bayern travel to VfL Osnabrück for a cup tie, and it is still unclear if Musiala will be included in the squad. The club has given no guarantees, only time and space.
The caution is understandable. Last season, Musiala already endured a long spell on the sidelines with a fibula fracture. He came back in January but needed weeks to rediscover rhythm and sharpness. The stop-start pattern has shadowed a player whose talent demands a clear run.
Even so, Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann kept faith and named him in the squad for the World Cup this summer. Like many of his international team-mates, Musiala struggled to leave a lasting mark on the tournament.
Now the focus shifts to something more fundamental than form: stability, health, and the chance to build uninterrupted momentum. Bayern have drawn their line in the sand by closing ranks around him.
The next move belongs to Kompany – and to Musiala’s body.
