Logan Dobbs Shines as Gillingham's Surprise Package
Gareth Ainsworth admits it straight. He did not see this coming from Logan Dobbs.
The 19-year-old defender has forced his way into Gillingham’s season and refuses to step out of it. Ever-present so far, he marked his rise with a landmark moment on Saturday, climbing to head home his first senior goal in a 2-0 victory over Tranmere.
For a player who began the campaign behind others in the pecking order, it has been a rapid shift in status.
Door opens, Dobbs walks through
The plan in August did not have Dobbs at the heart of it. Then the season kicked in and football did what it always does: it tore up the script.
“With the loss of Liam [Gordon, to injury] in the first game and Sam Gale's move to Barnsley, all of a sudden the door opened and Logan's been sensational,” Ainsworth told BBC Radio Kent.
The Gillingham boss did not try to dress it up.
“Logan Dobbs has been a surprise package for me this year,” he said. “And I think he will understand when I say I didn't know he was capable of – he's done really well to become one of the consistent members of the squad here.”
From cover option to constant presence, Dobbs has taken every start and turned it into a statement. The goal against Tranmere felt like a reward for weeks of steady, unfussy work.
“One of our own”
The reaction in the stands told its own story. Dobbs is not just holding a shirt; he is starting to own it.
“Songs were sung from the stands saying [Dobbs] is one of our own,” Ainsworth said. “So when he got his first goal in front of the fans then that's what dreams are made of.”
A homegrown defender, a first goal, a clean sheet and three points. Managers talk about moments that can bind a player to a fanbase. This looked like one of them.
Gillingham sit 11th in League Two, hovering in that congested middle ground where a season can still tilt either way. Next up, they host second-placed Bristol Rovers on Saturday.
Dobbs has already answered one question about whether he belongs at this level. The next one is sharper: can he help drag Gillingham higher, against promotion contenders, with the same calm authority that turned him from stopgap into “surprise package”?
