Livramento Injury Shakes England Before World Cup Opener

England’s World Cup campaign has been jolted before a ball is kicked, with Tino Livramento reportedly set to fly home on the eve of their opener against Croatia.

Thomas Tuchel’s squad are due to leave their Kansas City base for Texas after a final training session ahead of Wednesday’s Group L curtain-raiser. Until now, preparations had run smoothly. Every session in Missouri had featured a full squad, every player present, every drill completed under the cameras.

That picture has changed quickly.

Livramento, the Newcastle full-back who had pushed his way into the tournament squad, is now expected to miss the entire World Cup after sustaining a calf injury. The first public hint came on Sunday when he withdrew from pre-arranged media duties. Reports since have confirmed the worst fears: the problem is serious enough that England are preparing to replace him.

It is a brutal twist for a player whose versatility and energy had given Tuchel an extra dimension on the flanks. Instead of contesting a starting spot against Croatia, he is facing an early flight home.

Contingency Plan

Attention has already turned to the contingency plan. Chelsea centre-back Trevoh Chalobah is understood to be under consideration to come in for Livramento, a move that would subtly reshape the balance of England’s defensive options. Chalobah offers height, physicality and the ability to operate across the back line, but he does not replicate Livramento’s attacking thrust from full-back.

England do at least have a narrow window to act. FIFA regulations allow squads to replace injured players up to 24 hours before their first match, giving Tuchel and his staff until 3pm local time in Texas (9pm Irish time) to submit the necessary paperwork.

The timing is tight. The stakes are obvious. On the brink of a World Cup campaign, England must make a decisive call on a key squad place while Croatia wait in the heat of Texas.
