Sailor Maseko's Transfer to Copenhagen Confirmed
Sailor Maseko’s European leap is finally happening. After weeks of talks, Mamelodi Sundowns have agreed a transfer fee with Danish giants Copenhagen, clearing the last major hurdle for the 22-year-old winger to leave Chloorkop.
He is expected to fly out for his medical before the weekend. If he passes, the deal will be wrapped up and officially signed off, closing a turbulent chapter in his young career.
From World Cup high to Sundowns snub
Maseko leaves South Africa with his stock high on the international stage. He lit up Bafana Bafana’s 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign, scoring the winning goal against South Korea as South Africa punched through to the knockout phase for the first time in their history.
That should have been the springboard to cement his place at Sundowns. Instead, the opposite happened.
Despite his World Cup exploits, Sundowns left him out of their pre-season tour to Austria last month. The omission raised eyebrows and underlined what many around the club already sensed: the relationship had run its course.
Maseko himself had pushed for a change. Coach Miguel Cardoso recently confirmed that the attacker made it clear he wanted to leave and seek a fresh start elsewhere.
Promise, setbacks, and a Cypriot detour
Sundowns signed Maseko from SuperSport United in July 2023 after a breakout season with Matsatsantsa, a move that looked like the natural next step for one of the PSL’s most exciting young attackers.
But the path at Chloorkop quickly narrowed. Competition for places intensified, his minutes shrank, and by the second half of last season he had slipped out of favour.
Sundowns sent him on loan to AEL Limassol in Cyprus for the final six months of the campaign. That switch revived him. He rediscovered his form, played his way back into rhythm, and forced his way into the Bafana Bafana setup again.
Off the pitch, though, the experience left scars. The public broadcaster reported that payment issues dogged the final months of his stay in Cyprus, and Maseko was not keen on going back there once the loan expired.
A new chapter in Copenhagen
Copenhagen have now moved decisively, opting to buy Maseko outright rather than test him on loan. The transfer hands him a clean slate in Europe at a club with serious ambitions on the continental stage.
It also places him in illustrious company. Sibusiso Zuma became a cult figure at Copenhagen after joining in 2000, racking up 188 appearances and 53 goals and carving his name into South African football folklore with his exploits in Denmark.
Maseko will walk into the same club, chasing his own story, his own legacy. From Chloorkop frustrations to a Danish doorway opening wide, the question now is simple: how far can he run with it?
