Liverpool Targets Yan Diomande as Mohamed Salah Successor
Liverpool’s search for a Mohamed Salah successor has taken on a clear focal point: Yan Diomande. The RB Leipzig winger wants Anfield. Liverpool want him. The deal, as ever, comes down to money and resolve.
Diomande’s eye on Anfield
Liverpool have tracked the 19-year-old Ivory Coast international for months, identifying him as the ideal long‑term heir to Salah on the right flank. With the Egyptian icon set to leave this summer, the need is no longer theoretical. It’s urgent.
Talks are already under way. Liverpool have spoken to Diomande’s representatives, with sources indicating that the player is enthusiastic about stepping into Salah’s role and embracing the pressure that comes with it.
Paris Saint‑Germain have also registered their interest, but The i Paper reports that Diomande’s preference is Liverpool. The chance to inherit Salah’s position at Anfield, rather than simply join another superclub, is understood to be a decisive factor for the teenager.
The price of an heir
That enthusiasm doesn’t make negotiations simple. The i Paper states that Liverpool are in discussions with RB Leipzig over a transfer, but the German club’s demands are eye‑watering.
Leipzig are said to want £120m. Bild go even higher, suggesting the Bundesliga side could push for as much as €150m (£129.6m, $174.5m). For Fenway Sports Group, that fee is a major obstacle, even for a player they view as a centrepiece of the next era.
Liverpool believe Diomande fits the profile: young, explosive, technically sharp, and with the potential to grow into a talismanic figure. But they also know they will need movement on the price before anything can progress. At the moment, the valuation sits in the territory reserved for finished superstars, not emerging ones.
Leipzig dig in
On Leipzig’s side, there is no rush to cash in. Transfer insider Graeme Bailey reports that the club want to keep Diomande and are preparing to offer him a new contract that includes a release clause.
Crucially, sources indicate Diomande is not agitating for a move. He may be keen on Liverpool, but he is not waging a public battle to escape Leipzig. The German club want him to stay at least one more season, develop further, and then control his exit on their terms.
That stance strengthens Leipzig’s hand. They can point to a long‑term project, Champions League football, and a pathway where Diomande becomes the face of their team before making the leap to the Premier League or elsewhere.
Iraola’s backing, FSG’s dilemma
Inside Liverpool, the push for Diomande has full support. New head coach Andoni Iraola is understood to be completely aligned with FSG’s pursuit, viewing the winger as a player who can thrive in his high‑energy, front‑foot system.
Yet the club stand at a familiar crossroads. Do they stretch their financial model for a player they believe can define their attack for the next decade, or do they hold the line and walk away if Leipzig refuse to compromise?
If Leipzig maintain their hard stance and the fee stays at stratospheric levels, Liverpool may have to pivot. The need for a right‑sided forward to replace Salah will not disappear. The name might.
For now, the situation is clear. Diomande wants Liverpool. Liverpool want Diomande. Leipzig want to keep him. Something has to give — or Liverpool’s post‑Salah era will begin with a very different face on the right wing.
