Liverpool’s 25-man Premier League squad for the 2026-27 season dropped on Thursday – and it immediately sparked confusion.

Three names that have been heavily discussed all summer were nowhere to be seen: Jeremy Jacquet, Rio Ngumoha, and Giovanni Leoni.

No injury notes. No explanations. Just silence on the official list.

For a few hours, social media did the rest.

The reality is far calmer: all three are classed as U21 players and don’t need to be registered in the 25-man squad to feature in the league. They remain fully eligible to play for Liverpool this season.

Barcola headlines a streamlined 25

This was Liverpool’s first squad submission since the close of a summer window that brought more exits than arrivals and ended with a blockbuster.

Bradley Barcola, signed from Paris Saint-Germain in a deal worth $166 million, is the headline addition and could make his debut on Friday night against Ipswich Town. The French winger is one of 25 senior names locked in until the January window reopens.

Why Jacquet, Ngumoha and Leoni aren’t on the list

The initial shock at the trio’s absence quickly runs into the hard lines of Premier League regulation.

Each club can register a maximum of 25 senior players, with no more than 17 who do not meet the ‘homegrown’ criteria. Anyone under 21, born on or after January 1, 2005, does not need to be included in that 25-man list at all.

Those U21 players can still play in the league as normal. They just sit outside the formal quota.

Jacquet, born July 13, 2005, is the oldest of the three and falls neatly into that category. Ngumoha and Leoni are even younger, both teenagers and both classified as U21.

That technicality explains the paperwork. It also explains why the on-pitch reality has already moved on.

Jacquet and Ngumoha have already featured this season, underlining their status as part of Iraola’s plans despite their omission from the official squad document. Leoni, meanwhile, would likely have been involved had injury not intervened.

Injury picture: Gomez closest, Leoni and Chiesa to follow

Leoni’s name did come up this week – not on the squad list, but in the treatment room update. He is one of three Liverpool players currently sidelined, alongside Joe Gomez and Federico Chiesa.

Speaking before the trip to Ipswich, Iraola outlined the recovery order.

“The closest one is Joe,” he said when asked about the injured trio. “Joe will probably start training with us next week.

“He’s had a normal recovery from a muscle injury, more or less. We were expecting the time on this. I hope we can have him before the break, let’s say.

“The next one probably should be Giovanni Leoni. I think the plan is also to start training during the break, with the group, I think even Fede should be around those dates.”

So while Leoni’s name is missing from the 25, the timeline for his return is already pencilled in. Once fit, he can step straight into league action without any registration hurdle.

Rules, youth, and a changing Liverpool

Strip away the initial panic and the squad list underlines two things about this Liverpool rebuild.

First, the club has navigated the homegrown rules with a tight, senior core that still leaves room for manoeuvre in January. The 17 non-homegrown limit always looms over elite squads; Liverpool’s balance suggests careful planning rather than a scramble.

Second, the exclusion of Jacquet, Ngumoha, and Leoni from the formal list is not a snub. It’s a sign of how heavily the club is leaning on its U21 pool.
