Liberty Lady Flames Secure 1–0 Victory Against JMU
LYNCHBURG, Va. – Liberty didn’t blink. Short-handed at the back, locked in a street fight of a match, the Lady Flames found a late answer and refused to share the points.
With eight minutes left and a third straight draw with James Madison looming, Halle Engle slipped the knife in.
Engle Breaks the Deadlock
The game had been tight, tense, and increasingly desperate. Liberty, missing starting center back Lauren Littleton, had been dragged into a physical battle by a JMU side that smelled opportunity. By halftime, the Dukes held a 7–5 edge in shots, and both teams had forced three saves apiece. Nothing between them. Plenty of contact.
Then came the 82nd minute.
Engle timed her run with the JMU back line, shadowed closely by fellow forward Margaret Garner. As the defense hesitated, Garner didn’t. She slid a perfectly weighted ball into space, and Engle surged past, racing onto it as the goalkeeper charged off her line. One touch, one finish, and Liberty had its breakthrough – Engle’s third goal of the season and the 11th game-winner of her career.
JMU protested immediately, arms raised for offside. The officials went to the monitor. The crowd held its breath. The replay confirmed what Liberty believed: the goal stood.
From there, the Lady Flames shut the door.
Leja Stands Tall, Defense Adjusts
With Littleton out, freshman Dani Gubbels stepped into the starting lineup for the first time in her career and helped anchor a back line that had to learn on the fly. James Madison kept swinging, but Liberty’s defensive shape hardened as the night wore on.
Behind them, Ainsley Leja refused to crack.
The Liberty goalkeeper posted a season-high-tying six saves, smothering JMU’s best looks and calmly dealing with the chaos in front of her. The Dukes mustered just one shot in the final eight minutes after Engle’s goal as Liberty managed the clock and the tempo to see out the 1–0 win.
Leja’s numbers tell the story of her season: a 0.80 goals-against average, a .806 save percentage, and now three full 90-minute shutouts in 2024, pushing her career total to 24. This was Liberty’s fifth clean sheet of the year and its second 1–0 victory, joining an earlier win over VCU.
Home Fortress, Series Tilt
The result keeps Osborne Stadium perfect this season. Liberty improves to 4–0 at home and 6–2–1 overall, while nudging its all-time record against James Madison to 4–8–2. The recent history looks much tighter: the Lady Flames are now 3–2–2 in their last seven against the Dukes, with the past two meetings ending in draws and a 2019 Liberty win coming in overtime.
This one never needed extra time. Just patience.
Five Liberty players went the full 90 on a night that demanded concentration and composure. Up front, Engle now leads the team with three goals, while Garner and Avenly Monteith both sit on matching season totals of six points (2g, 2a), forming a balanced attacking core.

The non-conference slate wraps on Sunday, and the stakes shift again.
Liberty (6–2–1) will host Old Dominion (2–4) at Osborne Stadium, with kickoff set for 1 p.m. The Lady Flames will honor 11 members of their 2026 Senior Class in a pre-game ceremony, a nod to the backbone of a program that just keeps stacking shutouts and home wins.
If Thursday night is any indication, this group isn’t interested in sentimental send-offs. They’re building something far more stubborn: a home field no one wants to visit.
