Lennart Karl Ruled Out of World Cup Due to Injury

Teenage sensation Lennart Karl has been ruled out of the World Cup after suffering a serious muscle injury in training, dealing Germany a sharp and unexpected blow on the eve of the tournament.

The German Football Federation (DFB) confirmed the news on Friday, revealing that the 18-year-old Bayern Munich forward tore a muscle bundle in the final training session before Saturday’s friendly against the United States in Chicago.

“Lenny tore a muscle bundle today in the final training session and is ruled out because of this injury. Have a good recovery, we're thinking of you,” the DFB posted on Instagram, a stark, public full stop on a breakthrough season.

Rising star cut down on the brink

Karl’s absence slices into the optimism that had been building around Julian Nagelsmann’s squad. The teenager has been one of the revelations of the Bundesliga campaign, bursting into the top flight and quickly forcing his way into Vincent Kompany’s league-winning Bayern side.

He carried that momentum straight into the national team. On Sunday, he made his first start for Germany in a 4-0 win over Finland and marked the occasion with an assist, a performance that hinted at a fearless new attacking dimension just in time for the World Cup.

All of that now goes on hold.

Nagelsmann had already sounded a warning note in Chicago before the scan results arrived, admitting Karl’s injury “didn't look good” and confirming he had been taken to hospital. The diagnosis ended any faint hope of a late reprieve.

Ouedraogo called in as Germany reshuffle

Germany have moved quickly to plug the gap, calling up RB Leipzig midfielder Assan Ouedraogo to replace Karl in the squad. The change alters the balance of Nagelsmann’s options: a direct, in-form forward makes way for a versatile midfielder, forcing a tactical rethink just days before the opener.

The emotional impact, though, is harder to quantify. Karl had injected freshness and fearlessness into a team still trying to re-establish itself on the biggest stage. Losing him now strips away one of the most exciting new elements of Nagelsmann’s plan.

Neuer waits, but World Cup return still on

There was more injury news from Nagelsmann, this time involving a far more familiar name. Manuel Neuer will not feature against the United States as he continues his push for full fitness, but the head coach still expects the 40-year-old to be ready for Germany’s first World Cup match against Curacao on June 14.

Neuer’s recall in May stunned many observers. Almost two years after announcing his international retirement, the 2014 World Cup winner was brought back as Germany turned to his experience and aura for one more major tournament.

Nagelsmann, though, brushed aside any concern about the veteran’s lack of recent international action.

“At his age, he doesn't need a warm-up phase,” he said. “He knows how to handle high-pressure situations. He's on his way to peak fitness. However, we don't want to take any risks tomorrow.”

So Germany head into their final warm-up game without the emerging face of their future and without the old guardian of their past. One is already lost to this World Cup. The other is being carefully wrapped in cotton wool.

Nagelsmann must now prove that his reshaped squad can absorb the shock of Karl’s absence and still hit the ground running when the real thing starts on June 14.
