Kylian Mbappé Misses France Training Before UEFA Nations League

Kylian Mbappé was a conspicuous absentee at Clairefontaine on Tuesday, missing France’s training session just three days before their UEFA Nations League opener against Turkiye, according to L’Équipe.

The France captain was the only member of Zinédine Zidane’s 23-man squad not out on the pitch. He had taken part on Monday, when Zidane led his first full session as manager of Les Bleus, but stayed back at the Château de Clairefontaine on Tuesday with cold-like symptoms.

While the rest of the group worked under Zidane’s eye ahead of Friday night’s game, Mbappé remained indoors, monitored by the medical staff. L’Équipe reports there is no indication of a more serious problem at this stage, but his condition will be watched closely with a demanding international window looming.

Mbappé will be desperate to shake off the illness in time. France not only face Turkiye in their Nations League opener, they also have two meetings with Belgium and a clash with Italy scheduled during this break, a run that will test Zidane’s ideas early in his reign.

The Real Madrid forward arrives in camp as the undisputed leader of the squad. During last summer’s FIFA World Cup, he overtook Olivier Giroud to become France’s all-time top scorer, a landmark that underlined his status at the heart of this new cycle.

Now comes a potential tactical twist. RMC Sport reports that Zidane is considering pushing Mbappé back out to the left of the attack, a role he knows well, freeing up the central lane for Ousmane Dembélé. It would be a notable adjustment to the attacking hierarchy and a clear signal of Zidane’s intent to reshape France’s front line.

For that plan to take shape on Friday, though, Zidane first needs his star forward back on the grass, not looking out at it from the windows of the château.
