Kilmarnock's Defensive Woes Continue in Scottish Premiership

Kilmarnock’s season is only five games old, but the numbers already sting.

Derek McInnes’ side have shipped 14 goals in their opening Scottish Premiership fixtures, a tally that plants them in unwanted company. In the entire 21st century, only three top-flight sides in Scotland have conceded more at this stage of a campaign: Motherwell in 2005-06 with 15, Gretna’s ill-fated 2007-08 season with 15, and Dundee United’s chaotic 2022-23 start with 18.

That is the level of defensive trouble Kilmarnock now brush up against.

At the other end, the problems are just as stark. Kilmarnock have gone three league matches without finding the net, a barren run they have not matched in the Premiership since February 2021, when they went five games on the spin without scoring. For a side trying to build momentum, the goals have simply dried up.

The wider context does not offer much comfort either. Their recent record against Hibernian is grim reading: just one win in their last 17 Premiership meetings, with six draws and 10 defeats. That solitary success came in November 2022, a 1-0 victory under McInnes that now feels more like an outlier than a turning point.

Yet Hibernian bring their own crisis to the table.

They have lost five home games in a row in the top flight, something the club have not endured since August 2010. One more defeat at Easter Road and they will move into a bracket no team wants to join. The last side to lose six consecutive Scottish Premiership home matches were Dundee, who stumbled through such a run from February to May 2019.

So the stage is set: a Kilmarnock team leaking goals and starved of them, up against a Hibernian side staring down the barrel of a historic home losing streak.

Something has to give.
