Killian Phillips Receives Late Call-Up for UEFA Nations League

Killian Phillips has been handed a late chance to impress on the international stage after a bruising weekend for the Republic of Ireland squad.

Heimir Hallgrimsson has turned to the St Mirren midfielder for the upcoming UEFA Nations League fixtures, with Jamie McGrath and Harvey Vale both ruled out after picking up injuries on club duty.

McGrath, with Hibernian, and Queens Park Rangers’ Vale each pulled up in the warm-up before matches against Aberdeen and Preston North End respectively, immediately casting doubt over their availability. The doubts didn’t last long. Confirmation arrived on Monday morning that neither would be fit for the international window.

That opened the door for Phillips.

The 22-year-old will join up with the squad in Dublin today, linking in just before the travelling party heads for Pristina and Thursday’s opener against Kosovo. It is a sharp change of pace for the midfielder, who now finds himself dropped straight into the heart of a competitive international block.

Ireland’s schedule is a demanding one. After Kosovo, the Boys in Green move on to Debrecen in Hungary to take on Israel, then return to Dublin for a home clash with Austria at the Aviva Stadium. The window closes with a second meeting against Israel, this time in Bačka Topola, Serbia.

For Hallgrimsson, the injuries to McGrath and Vale disrupt his attacking and creative options, but Phillips’ call-up offers fresh legs and a different profile in midfield at a time when the calendar is unforgiving.
