JJ Gabriel Steps Away from Manchester United Academy
JJ Gabriel will be nowhere near Leigh Sports Village on Friday night. Manchester United’s highly rated 15-year-old will not feature in the club’s Premier League 2 clash with Brentford – and his absence runs far deeper than simple squad rotation.
The teenager, one of the brightest prospects in United’s academy, has hit the ground running in Premier League 2 this season. He announced himself on 24 August with a stunning debut goal, lifting the ball calmly over the Ipswich goalkeeper from around 20 yards. Seven days later, he followed it up with another eye-catching strike in a 4-1 win over Leicester, twisting inside the box, beating his man and finishing with the assurance of a far older forward.
Those moments did more than decorate an early-season highlights reel. They sparked genuine belief around the club that Gabriel might be fast-tracked into United’s squad for their opening Champions League fixture against Azerbaijan champions Sabah. Michael Carrick was in the stands for Gabriel’s first Premier League 2 outing, and senior coaching staff were present for the second. The message felt clear: the kid was on the radar.
Then came the jolt.
Gabriel was not named on United’s A list for the Champions League, the only route that would have allowed a player under 16 to be involved. United cruised to a 4-0 win over Sabah, and Carrick had used all five substitutes by the 72nd minute. Gabriel never had a chance to step onto the stage many around him thought he was ready for.
That decision is understood to have been one of the major flashpoints behind what followed. There had already been issues in the background. The Champions League omission helped push the situation to breaking point.
Gabriel is no longer training with Manchester United.
Inside the club, there is still a belief that the situation can be salvaged, that bridges can be rebuilt and a pathway mapped out. But people close to the player see it very differently. Their view is stark: they do not expect him to play for United again.
Right now, Gabriel’s exact whereabouts are unclear. His name is also not expected to feature when England’s latest youth squads are announced on Friday, a striking development for a player who, only weeks ago, looked to be accelerating through the system.
For United, it raises an uncomfortable question: can they keep hold of one of their most precocious young forwards, or has a 15-year-old already decided his future lies away from Old Trafford?
