James Garner Earns England Recall After Impressive Everton Start
James Garner has been handed another shot with England after his electric start to the season with Everton forced Thomas Tuchel’s hand.
The 25-year-old midfielder, who won his first cap in a friendly against Uruguay and a second against Japan in March, has been recalled for the upcoming UEFA Nations League fixtures. His return comes after a triple injury blow in midfield, with Declan Rice, Kobbie Mainoo and Cole Palmer all withdrawing from the squad.
Garner’s rise with Everton
Garner has quietly become one of the engines behind Everton’s unbeaten start to the Premier League campaign. He has started four of their five league matches, and the numbers back up what the eye test has been telling Goodison Park all month.
Inside the Toffees squad, he sits joint-second for tackles per game and fourth for interceptions per game. He also attempts more passes per game than any other Everton midfielder, a sign of how much responsibility he now carries in possession.
That club form has pushed him firmly into the conversation for a place in Tuchel’s preferred two-man central midfield. Garner will battle with Myles Lewis-Skelly, Elliot Anderson and Alex Scott for those spots, with every Nations League minute suddenly feeling like an audition.
Gibbs-White back in from the cold
Garner is not the only returning face.
Nottingham Forest’s Morgan Gibbs-White has also been brought back into the England fold after a sharp start to the season. The 26-year-old has one goal and two assists from five Premier League games, but his influence goes well beyond the raw output.
No player in the division has created more big chances so far, and only two have produced more key passes per game. It is the kind of creative profile England have often lacked between the lines.
Even so, Gibbs-White was left out of the 2026 World Cup squad despite strong form last season. This recall offers him a fresh platform to convince Tuchel he should be part of England’s longer-term plans.
Nations League test for Tuchel’s England
England assemble on Tuesday to begin preparations for a demanding Nations League schedule that will test Tuchel’s new-look midfield.
The Three Lions face Czechia twice, as well as meetings with Spain and Croatia. It is a group that should expose any weakness in control, creativity or defensive discipline in the centre of the pitch.
England finished third in the inaugural Nations League in 2018/19 and have not matched or bettered that since. With Garner and Gibbs-White now thrown into the mix, this campaign may tell Tuchel a lot about who he can trust to change that story.
