Investigation Launched After Incident Involving Cardiff Defender Bielik at Portsmouth Match
Police have launched an investigation after a flashpoint between Cardiff City defender Krystian Bielik and home supporters marred Portsmouth’s 2-0 Championship win at Fratton Park on Saturday.
The incident unfolded late in the second half as Bielik went to collect the ball from the stands. In the scramble, he became involved in a physical altercation with a fan.
Cardiff head coach Brian Barry-Murphy said afterwards that the Poland international “got slapped in the face”. Footage circulating on social media appeared to show Bielik grabbing a young supporter around the upper body as tempers flared near the touchline.
Hampshire Police later confirmed they are treating the matter as an alleged assault.
“We can confirm that we are investigating an incident in which a teenage boy was reportedly the victim of a common assault during the football match at Fratton Park. Our enquiries are ongoing,” a statement read.
From the stands, several Portsmouth fans gestured towards officials and players, indicating they believed the youngster had been grabbed by the throat. Emotions were running high. The game briefly threatened to spill beyond the white lines.
The flashpoint did not end there. In the aftermath, another home supporter threw a ball at the head of Cardiff defender Perry Ng. Both fans involved in the separate incidents were ejected from the stadium.
Portsmouth head coach John Mousinho moved quickly after the final whistle, offering an apology to Cardiff’s players for the behaviour of those supporters.
Pompey then followed up with a formal statement, stressing the safeguarding aspect of the case and urging restraint while the investigation continues.
“Portsmouth Football Club are aware of supporter concerns regarding the incident involving a young fan and an opposition player at yesterday’s match at Fratton Park.
“As this remains a safeguarding matter and is currently under investigation by both the club and the police, it would be inappropriate for us to comment further on the circumstances at this time.
“However, we are aware that a number of claims and assertions are circulating on social media. We would urge caution against speculation while enquiries are ongoing.
“The welfare and safeguarding of young people are of paramount importance to Portsmouth Football Club. We will continue to liaise with the relevant parties as enquiries progress.
“No further comment will be made at this stage while investigations remain ongoing.”
The Football Association has been made aware of the incident and will study the referee’s report before deciding whether to pursue any disciplinary action.
Cardiff City, for their part, backed the handling of the flashpoint during the game.
“We are satisfied with the way that match officials dealt with the situation during the game, having been in full view of it. Player protection will always be of paramount importance to us,” the club said.
The result at Fratton Park goes into the record books. What happens next, in police offices and disciplinary rooms, could shape how players and fans are policed at English grounds for the rest of the season.
