Hartlepool Faces Double Injury Blow with Merrick and Kouogun Out

Hartlepool United’s early-season momentum has been checked by a brutal double injury blow, with goalkeeper Max Merrick ruled out for six weeks and defender Max Kouogun facing the prospect of ankle surgery.

Merrick, on loan from Chelsea, limped out of Saturday’s 1-0 win over Woking shortly after the half-hour mark with a thigh problem and has now returned to his parent club for treatment. Scans have confirmed a tear that will keep the 21-year-old out until late October at best.

Manager Darren Clark, speaking to BBC Radio Tees, confirmed the diagnosis and the plan.

Merrick has been sent back to Cobham to make full use of Chelsea’s medical department, with Hartlepool in daily contact as he works through his rehab. The intention is for the keeper to rejoin Pools once he nears a return to action.

While that news was bad enough, the update on Kouogun cut even deeper.

The defender damaged ankle ligaments after landing awkwardly in the defeat to Eastleigh in August, and a scan has now revealed the extent of the problem. He will miss at least two months and could be out for up to three if a specialist recommends surgery when he sees a consultant.

For Clark, it strips him of a key presence at the back for a significant chunk of the campaign and forces an early reshuffle of his defensive plans.

The immediate consequence of Merrick’s lay-off is a change in goal. Summer signing Nathan Fisher, who replaced Merrick against Woking, is now in line to start Friday night’s fixture against Kidderminster Harriers (19:45 BST). That promotion would push player/goalkeeping coach Adam Smith up to the role of No. 2.

Hartlepool are already exploring ways to plug the gap. Clark will hold talks with head of football operations Chris Maxwell, of club advisors Bromby & Partners, to assess whether the market offers a short-term solution to cover Merrick’s absence.
