Harding Soccer Suffers Defeat Against Washburn

SEARCY, Ark. — For 45 minutes on Sunday, Harding did what it has done better than anyone to start the 2026 season: refuse to break.

Another match, another scoreless first half. Another opponent frustrated at the Stevens Soccer Complex.

But this time, Washburn found the crack.

The Ichabods struck twice in barely a minute early in the second half, turning a tight non-conference battle into a 2-0 road win and handing the Lady Bisons their second loss of the young season.

Defensive streak continues… then snaps

Harding, now 1-2-2, extended a remarkable early-season trend. All five of its matches have gone to halftime locked at 0-0. The pattern held again as the Lady Bisons absorbed early pressure and went into the break level.

Washburn came out sharp from the opening whistle, pushing numbers forward and testing Harding’s back line throughout the first 45. The Lady Bisons held firm, cutting out chances and turning away each look on goal to keep the game deadlocked at the interval.

The resistance didn’t last much longer.

Washburn finally broke through in the 57th minute, converting a chance to seize a 1-0 lead. Before Harding could reset, the Ichabods were back again. Just one minute later, in the 58th, they doubled the advantage and effectively killed off the contest, preserving their unbeaten start to the season.

Missed chances going the other way

Harding tried to answer on the counter, looking to spring forward quickly whenever it broke Washburn’s press. The ideas were there; the finishing touch was not.

The Lady Bisons generated looks but struggled to turn those moments into clear-cut chances against a disciplined Washburn back line. The visitors edged the shot count 16-13 overall, with both sides firing eight times in the second half, but Harding couldn’t find the moment to drag itself back into the match.

Now the focus turns from non-conference tests to league business.

Harding opens Great American Conference play on Wednesday at East Central, with kickoff set for 3 p.m. in Ada, Oklahoma. The defensive base is there. The question is whether the goals will follow when the games start to count in the standings.
