Guimarães Waits for Premier League Start as Arsenal Face Sunderland

Bruno Guimaraes will have to wait a little longer for his first Premier League start in an Arsenal shirt, with the £75million summer signing again named on the bench for tonight’s trip to Sunderland.

The former Newcastle captain, already a marked man in these parts, is braced for a ferocious reception at the Stadium of Light if Mikel Arteta turns to him. He has endured a stop–start opening to life in north London, minor injury problems slowing the rhythm Arsenal hoped he would bring to their midfield.

Guimaraes did get a taste of action in midweek, coming off the bench in the Champions League win over Napoli. Arteta has chosen continuity rather than risk, keeping the Brazilian in reserve as Arsenal return to Wearside.

Changes after Napoli, and a key return

Two fresh faces come back into the XI. Christos Tzolis and Kai Havertz are both restored to the starting lineup after only brief cameos in Wednesday’s 1-0 group-stage victory in Naples, a result that kept Arsenal’s European campaign on track.

The more eye-catching name, though, sits among the substitutes.

Jurrien Timber makes a Premier League matchday squad for the first time since his injury in March. The defender has steadily ramped up his recovery, travelling with the squad to Italy in midweek, though he did not make the bench against Napoli. Tonight, he is back in the frame, a significant milestone in Arsenal’s season.

At the other end of the spectrum, Mosquera is absent again. He misses out for a third straight match after sustaining a muscle problem in the win over Aston Villa, an issue that has stalled his early momentum.

Saliba still out as Arsenal manage defensive load

William Saliba remains a long-term absentee. The centre-back faces an extended spell on the sidelines after aggravating an existing back problem while on World Cup duty with France earlier in the summer. Arsenal’s medical team have opted against surgery, but his recovery will not be rushed.

So Arsenal arrive at Sunderland with a record signing on the bench, a key defender still missing, and a long-awaited return for Timber. On a cold, hostile Wearside night, Arteta may need every one of those options before this one is done.
