Go Ahead Eagles Draw with FC Groningen: A Match of Frustration and Drama
Go Ahead Eagles walked off to applause and frustration in equal measure. A storm of pressure, a late equaliser, a glaring miss. Only a 1-1 draw to show for it against a spent FC Groningen side in De Adelaarshorst.
For a long time, it looked like Groningen might just steal it.
They survived wave after wave from the hosts and then, almost casually, landed the first blow. Brynjólfur Willumsson picked up the ball on the edge of the box and didn’t hesitate. One touch, then a thunderous strike. The shot ripped past Kjetil Haug and into the net. Against the run of play, Groningen led 0-1 and suddenly had something to cling to.
From that moment, the pattern was clear. Go Ahead Eagles with the ball, Groningen dropping deeper, lines tightening, every clearance cheered by the away end. The home crowd sensed it was coming, though. Søren Tengstedt certainly did.
The league’s most in-form finisher kept finding pockets of space. When he spotted Etienne Vaessen off his line, Tengstedt tried a clever lob that seemed destined to float in. Vaessen refused to play along, backpedalling and clawing the ball away with a superb save that briefly silenced the stands.
Half-time changed nothing about the storyline, only the intensity.
Joseph Oosting’s side came out with even more urgency. Thibo Baeten got his chance, then Stefan Ingi Sigurdarson had a look. Shots flew in, crosses rained down, but Groningen’s resistance held. Bodies in the way, clearances off the line, every second starting to feel longer than the last for the visitors.
The pressure finally snapped in the 82nd minute.
Go Ahead sliced straight through the middle with a sharp move, and this time Tengstedt didn’t bother with subtlety. He met the ball and hammered it past Vaessen, low and ruthless. 1-1, De Adelaarshorst erupting, and with it another milestone: Tengstedt’s fifth goal of the season, enough to stand alone as the Eredivisie’s current top scorer.
The equaliser didn’t cool Go Ahead. It lit a fire.
The hosts refused to settle. They poured forward, chasing the winner their performance seemed to demand. Groningen, exhausted, hung on by instinct more than structure. Then came the moment that will replay in Go Ahead minds for days.

The stadium braced for the net to bulge. Instead, disbelief. The striker somehow slid his effort wide, the kind of miss that draws hands to heads on the pitch and in the stands. From ecstasy to shock in a heartbeat.
When the final whistle went, both sides had a point. On paper, a shared result. In reality, two very different emotions.
Go Ahead Eagles will carry a bitter taste, knowing they had Groningen on the ropes and the winner staring them in the face. Groningen, out on their feet by the end, could hardly have squeezed more out of the night.
