Gavi’s Journey: Pressure, Patience, and Lessons from Injury
Gavi is no longer the untouchable name on Barcelona’s teamsheet, but inside the club there is no doubt about how Hansi Flick sees him. The coach trusts him, counts on him, and keeps drawing him into his plans, even as competition for places tightens around the Andalusian midfielder.
The 22-year-old knows nothing is guaranteed. So he works. Every day. Every session. Every chance to convince Flick that he deserves more minutes in a squad stacked with midfield options.
“Now there is much greater pressure”
Speaking to Men’s Health, Gavi opened up about how his relationship with pressure has shifted since he first broke through.
“Now there is much greater pressure than there was when I was 17 years old. At that time I did not realise where I was. The younger I was, the more I enjoyed football,” he said.
Back then, everything felt light. Now, the weight of expectation is real. He is no longer the fearless kid who burst into the first team; he is a reference point, a player judged by what he has already done and what he is supposed to become.
And yet, the hardship he has faced has reshaped him.
Lessons from the injury
Gavi has already endured the kind of setback that can bend a young career out of shape. The serious knee injury that wiped out almost an entire season forced him to stop, to wait, to think.
“Perhaps I was not patient in the past, but now I am more patient,” he admitted. “When I was injured, I had to complete the stages and set goals. It was also useful for me to learn other things beyond football. Now I can say that I take care of myself much better than I did when I started my professional career.”
The rehab changed his rhythm. No longer just the kid who plays on instinct, he became the professional who plans, who listens to his body, who understands that a career is a long road, not a sprint from one game to the next.
A knee that never leaves his mind
Even now, when he is fit and back in the squad, that knee never truly disappears.
“My knee must always be strong, whether I play or not,” he explained. “I cannot be lax because the injury could happen at any moment.”
There is no off switch. No days where he can drift or ease off the work. The fear of another setback is not paralysing, but it is present enough to keep him sharp.
Through that long spell on the sidelines, one thing anchored him.
“My family,” he said, were the ones who carried him. “I isolated myself with my family, and that helped me a lot.”
Away from the noise, away from the constant chatter around Barcelona, he rebuilt himself with the people who know him best.
Big praise for Lamine Yamal
Gavi’s gaze is not only on his own path. He sees the next wave coming, and one name stands out: Lamine Yamal.
“This player is very skilful on the pitch, but he surprises you even more in training,” Gavi said, reserving special praise for his young team-mate. “I only hope he keeps developing. He is aware of his abilities. He can be among the best of all time.”
That is not a throwaway line. Inside the dressing room, players see what the cameras miss, and Gavi is convinced by what he watches every day.
“I see him as mentally strong, and that is the most important thing in the end,” he added. “He knows what he wants, and he still has a long football future ahead of him. He must continue in this way every day, because the present is the most important thing, and everyone will be watching him closely every day.”
Gavi knows exactly what that spotlight feels like. Now, as he battles to reclaim a guaranteed place and protect a knee that changed his career, he does so in a Barcelona side where the bar keeps rising — and where standing still is no longer an option.
