Gasperini Takes Charge in Roma's Pursuit of Greenwood
Roma are not leaving this one to agents and intermediaries. Gian Piero Gasperini has stepped directly into the Mason Greenwood chase, reportedly calling the forward himself to deliver a clear message: wait for us.
According to Corriere dello Sport, the Roma coach has asked the 24-year-old to hold fire while the club put the final pieces of their approach to Marseille in place. It is a bold move, but it fits the mood in the capital. Gasperini spent much of the 2025-26 season lamenting his lack of cutting edge in attack and now sees Greenwood as the centrepiece of a rebuilt frontline.
This is not a casual enquiry. The manager’s personal intervention underlines how heavily Greenwood features in Roma’s plans as they aim to launch a serious tilt at the Serie A title next season. Gasperini wants a forward who can decide games on his own. Greenwood, after a productive spell in Ligue 1, fits that profile.
Personal terms agreed, project sold
Roma appear to have done the hard part with the player. The Giallorossi are understood to have reached an agreement on personal terms with Greenwood, who is described as keen on a move to the Stadio Olimpico and attracted by the project being laid out for him.
The proposed contract is said to include a tiered salary, starting at €4 million net per season and rising with performance and objectives. It is a structure that reflects both Roma’s financial reality and their belief that Greenwood can grow into one of the club’s highest-impact players.
At boardroom level, the courtship has been just as direct. Owner Ryan Friedkin has reportedly been in contact with Greenwood’s camp to spell out the role awaiting him in Rome, from his tactical fit to his importance in the club’s medium-term plan. The message is clear: this is not a rotation signing. This is a focal point.
Fenerbahce fade, Roma move to the front
Not long ago, Fenerbahce were strongly linked with Greenwood. That path has cooled. After recent club elections in Istanbul, interest from the Turkish side has dropped away, removing one of Roma’s main rivals in the race.
The vacuum has allowed Roma to move decisively. With fewer serious bidders on the table, the Giallorossi hierarchy sense an opening to close a deal that would reshape Gasperini’s attack and send a signal to the rest of Serie A about their ambitions.
The money gap: €55m vs €40m
The enthusiasm on all sides does not change one basic problem: the fee.
Marseille, under pressure to make a major sale to satisfy Financial Fair Play demands, are still holding a firm line on Greenwood’s valuation. The French club are said to be looking for a figure in the region of €55 million after his strong season in Ligue 1, and they know there is a market for a player of his age and profile.
Roma are preparing to test that stance. Their opening proposal is expected to come in at around €40 million including bonuses, a significant offer but still short of Marseille’s asking price. The Italians are also exploring a structure based on an initial loan with an obligation to buy, a formula that would ease the immediate hit on their balance sheet.
For Marseille, that is the dilemma. They need liquidity now to satisfy financial watchdogs, which makes a staggered deal less attractive, even if the total package edges closer to their valuation. The negotiation will turn on how much risk each club is willing to carry.
Old Trafford watching the numbers
There is another interested party quietly tracking every development: Manchester United.
When United sold Greenwood to Marseille, they inserted a substantial sell-on clause into the agreement. Any permanent transfer this summer will send a slice of the fee back to Old Trafford, topping up United’s own summer budget without them having to lift a finger in the market.
The exact percentage remains undisclosed, but its presence adds another layer to the talks. The higher the final fee, the more United stand to gain, which suits them just fine as they plan their own rebuild.
Sell-on sweetener and a player already packing
Roma, for their part, are prepared to get creative. Reports suggest they are even willing to include a sell-on clause of their own in favour of Marseille, potentially above 10 per cent, to help bridge the gap in valuation. It is an unusual concession for a club trying to climb financially, but it underlines how badly they want this deal.
While the clubs haggle over structure, clauses and exact millions, Greenwood’s actions hint at where his mind is. He has reportedly already begun the process of vacating his home in France, anticipating a move across the Alps.
Now the question is simple: will Roma and Marseille find common ground in time for Gasperini to build his new attack around the Englishman, or will one of the summer’s most intriguing transfer pursuits stall on the final stretch?
