Gabriel Jesus Set for Barcelona Debut Against Valencia

Barcelona will not keep their new signing under wraps for long. Gabriel Jesus is already in the frame to make his debut on Sunday, with Hansi Flick ready to unleash the Brazilian – at least briefly – away to Valencia at Mestalla.

The move has happened fast. The adaptation might not. Flick made it clear in his pre-match press conference that Jesus is still short of full fitness, but the coach sees enough in training to trust him with his first minutes in a Barça shirt.

“I've enjoyed watching him, what I've seen,” Flick said. “He's not at 100% yet, but he could get some playing time in the second half. He's ready. I like how I've seen him, with the ball, he stays calm in front of goal.”

That calm is exactly what Barcelona want from him. Jesus arrives with a defined role: not as the star around whom everything revolves, but as a high-level squad piece, a forward who can spell Raphinha on the right and keep the team’s intensity intact. When Raphinha presses, chases, and stretches the pitch, Jesus is expected to mirror that. When the Brazilian cuts inside or combines between the lines, Jesus must match that quality too.

At his peak with Manchester City and Arsenal, Jesus built a reputation as a complete forward. He pressed relentlessly, linked play, attacked the box, and still had the composure to finish. Barcelona believe their structure and style can help him rediscover that version of himself, even if the starting point is as a rotation option rather than an automatic starter.

The only cloud is his physical condition. Flick did not hide the fact that Jesus cannot yet handle a heavy workload. Long stretches from the opening whistle are off the table for now. Short, sharp minutes off the bench are not.

For a Barça side juggling domestic demands and the need for depth in attack, that might be enough to start with. If the fitness comes, the quality is not in doubt.
