Gabriel Gudmundsson Returns to Action for Leeds United
Gabriel Gudmundsson had waited months for this. So had Leeds United’s travelling support.
When he finally stepped back into competitive action in the 1-1 draw at Brighton, it marked his first appearance for the club since April, a long stretch shaped by rehab rooms and recovery drills rather than roaring crowds.
The 27-year-old has battled back from a hamstring injury, and he was quick to share the credit. Speaking to BBC Radio Leeds, Gudmundsson praised the club’s physio staff for steering him through the grind of his comeback, the unseen work that made Saturday possible.
The setting for his return was anything but gentle. Brighton away is rarely a soft landing, and Gudmundsson didn’t pretend otherwise.
“I feel Brighton is a difficult place to come,” he said. “Last season we lost here quite badly, so I think we are doing some good stuff.”
This time, Leeds stood firm. Daniel Farke’s side extended their unbeaten start to the season to four matches, a run that has quietly built momentum and belief. The scars of that heavy defeat on the south coast last year gave this point an extra edge of satisfaction.
For Gudmundsson, though, this felt like more than just a solid result. It was a line in the sand.
“The process starts now, and it is going to get better and better for us,” he said, looking ahead rather than back.
Leeds now turn to the Carabao Cup, where Chelsea await in the third round on Wednesday. A tougher stage, a bigger spotlight, and for Gudmundsson, another chance to prove that his season – and Leeds’ – is only just beginning.
