Fernandes vs Haaland: Captaincy Decision for Gameweek 2

Erling Haaland will still carry the armband for most Fantasy Premier League managers in Gameweek 2. He almost always does. But the numbers – and the fixtures – are screaming one name in opposition: Bruno Fernandes.

Manchester United’s playmaker, priced at £12.0m, hosts promoted Ipswich Town at Old Trafford on Sunday. It’s exactly the kind of home fixture where he turned into a machine last season, finishing as the top-scoring player in home matches.

Haaland, at £15.5m, heads to Crystal Palace in the Friday night curtain-raiser. He was the standout performer away from home in 2025/26, but his record on the road still doesn’t quite match Fernandes’ dominance at Old Trafford.

Ownership, Armbands… and Blanks

Gameweek 1 was a reminder that even the biggest Fantasy names can let you down.

Haaland was captained by a massive 4.38 million managers. Fernandes? Just 1.48 million. Their ownership figures were equally huge – 67.9 per cent for Haaland, 48.5 per cent for Fernandes – yet both returned only two points and blanked.

For many, that will be enough to stick with the Manchester City forward and hope for a quick correction. But the deeper you dig into last season’s data, the stronger Fernandes’ case becomes for Gameweek 2.

The Home King v the Away Destroyer

Look at 2025/26 and the contrast is stark.

    • Eight double-figure hauls in 17 home matches
    • Just three blanks across those games
    • 7.3 points per start
    • 17 combined goals and assists at Old Trafford
  • Haaland away:
    • Four double-figure hauls in 18 away outings
    • Seven blanks on the road
    • 6.6 points per start
    • 16 combined goals and assists away from home

Fernandes delivered double digits twice as often in his favoured environment as Haaland did in his. He also offered a far lower risk of a blank. With Ipswich visiting a United side built around his creativity and set-piece threat, the numbers lean heavily towards the Portuguese star.

The Chasing Pack: Odegaard, Palmer, Joao Pedro

While Haaland and Fernandes stalled in Gameweek 1, others exploded out of the blocks.

Martin Odegaard (£6.6m), Cole Palmer (£9.5m) and Joao Pedro (£7.6m) all produced double-figure hauls in the opening round.

Odegaard operated in the most advanced central role behind Kai Havertz for Arsenal, scored, and walked away with 11 points against Coventry City. Next up is an Aston Villa side still reeling from a 4-0 defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion. That bruising loss puts a spotlight on Villa’s defensive fragility, and Odegaard’s advanced position makes him a genuine captaincy shout for those willing to go braver.

Palmer and Joao Pedro carried Chelsea in style at Fulham. Both delivered a goal and an assist in their first match of 2026/27, underlining their potential as dual-threat assets. Now they return to Stamford Bridge to face Brighton, mirroring Fernandes’ advantage of a home fixture.

All three – Odegaard, Palmer, Joao Pedro – offer form, attacking roles and strong fixtures. But the ceiling, and the safety, still feel slightly higher for Fernandes this week.

So Who Gets the Armband?

Strip away the fear of going against Haaland’s ownership and the answer becomes clearer.

Fernandes’ home record is simply too strong to ignore when Ipswich arrive at Old Trafford. He has to be backed to outscore Haaland in Gameweek 2 based on last season’s trends and the fixtures in front of them.

Behind him, Odegaard and Palmer stand out as powerful differential captain options, with Odegaard just edging third place thanks to his central role and Villa’s shaky start.

The template will cling to Haaland. The brave may turn to Fernandes. When the points drop this weekend, which side of that divide will you be on?
