Federico Valverde’s Champions League Streak Continues

Federico Valverde’s hot streak shows no sign of cooling, and now the Champions League is feeling the heat.

The Uruguayan midfielder struck again on Tuesday night as Real Madrid edged Inter Milan 2-1 at the Santiago Bernabeu in the opening round of the league phase. His goal, Real’s second of the evening, came on 23 minutes and underlined just how dramatically his output in Europe has shifted.

Four goals in his last five Champions League games. That’s the current run. According to Opta, it already eclipses what he produced across his first 75 appearances in the competition. Back then, as a younger and more conservative presence in midfield, Real’s captain managed just three goals in those 75 matches.

Now he is arriving in the box with purpose, finishing with conviction, and tilting tight games Madrid’s way.

The win over Inter gives Los Blancos an early platform in the league phase, and Valverde’s form is central to that. The calendar, though, offers no time to bask. Real Madrid return to La Liga duty on the 12th of this month against Rayo Vallecano, before heading to the Italian capital on 14 October for their second Champions League fixture of the campaign.

If this is the version of Valverde Europe has to deal with from now on, those numbers may only be the start.
