FC Utrecht Fights Back to Draw 3-3 with Go Ahead Eagles

The stands were empty, the mood anything but. In a silent Stadion Galgenwaard on Tuesday afternoon, FC Utrecht squeezed life back into a match – and a season – that had looked completely lost.

Given 25 minutes plus stoppage time to repair the damage from Saturday’s chaos, Utrecht turned 1-3 into 3-3 against Go Ahead Eagles, salvaging a point from a fixture that had been abandoned under a cloud of shame.

From fireworks to fallout

The original game on Saturday had spiralled out of control in the second half. On the pitch, Utrecht collapsed. Off it, a section of their own supporters did the same.

Go Ahead Eagles had already raced into a 0-3 lead. Mathis Suray struck first, Søren Tengstedt added another, and Victor Edvardsen piled on a third. Utrecht, with just one point from their opening four league matches, looked broken.

Then came the fireworks. Literally. Pyrotechnics rained onto the pitch from the home end, forcing the referee to halt play. After a stoppage, the match resumed and Utrecht briefly flickered into life: Dani de Wit pulled one back, 1-3, a small spark in a dark night.

Almost immediately, more objects flew from the stands. This time it was cups. The context was impossible to ignore: a dramatic, dismal start to the season, frustration spilling over the barriers and onto the grass.

After talks with the local authorities, the decision came. The game would not continue. Abandoned.

A restart in an empty stadium

The verdict followed soon after: the remaining minutes would be played on Tuesday afternoon, behind closed doors. No fans. No noise. Just 25 minutes plus stoppage time for Utrecht to rescue something from the wreckage.

They played like a team that knew it.

Utrecht pushed, snapped into challenges, and went hunting for a way back. Adrian Blake came closest first, cutting in and unleashing a fierce effort that smashed against the top of the crossbar. The sound echoed around the empty Galgenwaard, a reminder of what was missing and what was still at stake.

The pressure finally told. From a corner, Matisse Didden rose and powered a header home. 2-3. Suddenly, the impossible didn’t feel so far away.

Go Ahead Eagles still had their chances. Suray, already on the scoresheet from Saturday, broke through again and seemed set to kill off the comeback. Vasilios Barkas stood firm, saving Utrecht when they were wide open at the back.

That stop kept belief alive.

Stepanov holds his nerve

As the clock ticked down, Utrecht threw everything forward. The reward came late. Blake, lively and direct, drove into the box and drew a foul from Alfons Sampsted. The referee pointed to the spot. A golden chance, season hanging off a single kick.

Artem Stepanov stepped up. No crowd. No roar. Just him, the ball, and the weight of a club desperate for something to cling to.

He buried it. 3-3.

From 0-3 down in a poisoned atmosphere to a draw carved out in total silence, Utrecht walked away with a point that felt like more than just a number on the table. The question now is whether this strange, fractured match becomes the moment their season finally turns.
