Evan Ferguson's Road to Recovery at Brighton

Evan Ferguson is edging his way back towards the Brighton first team, but the club are refusing to circle a date on the calendar.

The Republic of Ireland striker has not played since an ankle injury wrecked the back end of last season and cut short his loan spell at Roma, where he scored five times in 22 appearances in Serie A. Surgery in March fixed the problem. The hard part has been everything since.

Brighton have started the new campaign at full tilt – a 4-0 demolition of Aston Villa followed by a chaotic 4-3 defeat at Chelsea – but they are still doing it without one of the most gifted finishers to come through their system. For now, Ferguson is stuck in the grind of rehab.

“He’s getting closer,” head coach Fabian Hurzeler said ahead of Saturday’s Premier League home game against Leeds United. “He’s in his rehab. I can’t give a clear timescale for when he will be back.”

An early October return had been floated as a realistic target. Hurzeler batted that away. No promises, no countdown, just a steady climb back to full trust in that repaired ankle.

What is not in doubt is what Brighton believe Ferguson can be when he is right.

“Everyone knows what Evan is capable of doing. He proved it a few years ago here at Brighton,” Hurzeler said. “I think he was one of the best strikers in the Premier League, so hopefully he can get back on track.”

Three years ago, the Meath native became the first teenager since Wayne Rooney to hit 10 Premier League goals in a calendar year. That landmark hinted at a frightening ceiling. The story since has been stop-start, his progress repeatedly checked by injuries just as momentum built.

Hurzeler’s message now is as much psychological as physical.

“Hopefully he gets his mind in the right position,” he said. “I think that’s the key after these kinds of injuries, that you get back on track and have complete trust in your own body.

“Only if you feel really safe and trust your own body are you capable of playing at the highest level. That’s the main focus now, and then let’s see what happens.”

Brighton have seen the version of Evan Ferguson who bullies centre-backs and finishes without a second thought. The question, as his comeback inches closer, is when the Premier League will see that version again – and what he might look like once he finally gets a clear run.
