Erling Haaland's Record-Breaking Journey Continues

Erling Haaland does not wait for records to come to him. He hunts them down.

On another European night, in another city, the outcome felt familiar. Haaland struck twice in Manchester City’s 2-0 win at FC Porto, opening his account in the 47th minute and finishing the job in the 91st, as City began their UEFA Champions League league phase with three points and a clear message.

The numbers are starting to look absurd. Fifty-nine goals in 59 Champions League matches. A goal a game in Europe’s toughest competition. Thirty-six of those now in City colours, pulling him level with Sergio Aguero as the club’s all-time top scorer in the Champions League.

Aguero needed a decade to build his legend in this competition for City. Haaland has matched his mark in barely over two seasons.

The inevitability of it all is what stands out. There had been whispers before kick-off that this might be the night he sat out, that Enzo Maresca might finally give his No. 9 a breather after a relentless start to the season. Haaland had just come off a World Cup campaign with Norway in which he scored seven goals in five matches, and the schedule is already unforgiving.

Maresca understood the strain.

“It’s not easy for Erling or for any of the players that play for club and international teams," the City manager said before the game. "I think it is normal that you see these players start to be tired. So, it’s correct to give them some rest. It can be one game out or one week away.

“It depends on which moment we are in but the priority is to allow the players to be good and happy. When you see them tired the risk of injury increases, and we need players who are 100 percent.”

On this evidence, Haaland is still close enough to that mark to terrify defences.

His first goal, just after half-time, broke the deadlock and Porto’s resistance. The second, deep into stoppage time, underlined the gulf. The pressure that had been building finally told, and of course it was Haaland who applied the finish.

These are not just isolated strikes. The Porto double extended his scoring run to three consecutive matches. The weekend before, he had reached 300 club goals, hitting that milestone faster than even Cristiano Ronaldo and Kylian Mbappé managed. The week before that, another brace. Every game, every week, the tally climbs.

Already, the conversation is shifting from seasonal targets to legacy. Haaland has 167 goals in 203 appearances for City across all competitions. Aguero’s club record of 260 once looked untouchable; now it feels like a question of when, not if.

The contrast is striking. Aguero carved out a decade-long career in sky blue, scoring the goal that changed the club’s history and setting standards that seemed impossible to match. Haaland arrived in 2022 and is tearing through those benchmarks at a pace that defies logic.

City will not dwell on the numbers for long. The Champions League campaign has started as they wanted, with control, clean sheet, and their centre-forward already in stride. Next comes something different: the derby.

Manchester United await on Sunday, Sept. 13. Different competition, same expectation. City will go into that game knowing one thing above all.
