Erling Haaland Available for Arsenal Clash: Maresca's Community Shield Dilemma

Erling Haaland will be available for Manchester City against Arsenal in the Community Shield – and that is the line that changes the whole feel of Sunday’s curtain-raiser.

For a few anxious minutes on Thursday, that status looked in doubt. Haaland stepped out of the latter stages of City’s open training session, sparking the usual flurry of whispers and camera zoom-ins. Enzo Maresca shut it all down in a sentence.

“He was ok, he had just a small thing, but he was ok,” the City head coach said.

So the fitness debate is over. The selection debate is not.

Haaland or Marmoush?

Haaland is fit, but not battle-ready in the usual sense. He has yet to play a minute of pre-season after an extended break following Norway’s run to the World Cup quarter-finals. Match rhythm is another level entirely, and Maresca has a very real alternative.

Omar Marmoush has barged his way into the conversation. His brace in the 3-1 friendly win over Atletico Madrid did more than pad a pre-season scoreline; it underlined that he can lead the line with tempo and aggression from the first whistle.

If Maresca wants intensity from the off, Marmoush up top makes obvious sense. Haaland starting on the bench in mid-August would not be a snub, just sensible load management for a season that will stretch deep into next year.

Behind the striker, the shape looks clearer. Phil Foden is expected to operate in the No 10 role, the creative hub between the lines. Out wide, Antoine Semenyo and Jeremy Doku offer raw pace and direct running, the sort of threat that can rip open an Arsenal side still bedding in their own early-season patterns.

Doku, fresh from signing a new contract, has every chance of keeping his place. He finished last season with momentum, and nothing in pre-season has weakened that grip.

Midfield Puzzle Without Rodri

The bigger question lies a few yards further back. With Tijjani Reijnders closing in on a move to Al Qadsiah, Maresca needs to lock in a partner for Mateo Kovacic at the base of midfield.

He has three distinct profiles in front of him.

• Rico Lewis brings versatility and energy, comfortable stepping into different lanes and giving City that familiar extra man in build-up.
• Elliot Anderson, the £116 million marquee arrival, is the bold option – a statement pick that would signal trust in his ability to handle a high-profile domestic showpiece immediately.
• Nico Gonzalez, by contrast, offers the steady hand, the safer choice if Maresca leans towards control over experimentation.

The timing complicates everything. Anderson, Marc Guehi and Rayan Cherki have only just returned to training. Throwing any of them straight into a starting XI against Arsenal would be a gamble on fitness and sharpness, not just talent.

Rodri’s situation removes one safety net. The midfield anchor is back at the training ground after minor back surgery, but he remains in rehabilitation and this fixture comes too early. For once, City must plan a big game without their metronome.

Defence Taking Shape

At the back, the picture is shifting too. Rayan Ait-Nouri has made a genuine push for the left-back slot, his pre-season form strong enough to ask serious questions of the existing hierarchy.

If Ait-Nouri starts, the knock-on is significant. Josko Gvardiol could be moved inside to partner Ruben Dias at centre-back, giving City a blend of physical dominance and progressive passing through the heart of their defence.

Gianluigi Donnarumma is expected to start in goal, with Matheus Nunes likely to feature in the back line on the right, adding another ball-playing option from deep.

Put it all together and the predicted XI has a fresh, slightly experimental feel:

Donnarumma; Nunes, Dias, Gvardiol, Ait-Nouri; Kovacic, Nico Gonzalez; Semenyo, Foden, Doku; Marmoush.

Haaland will be there, waiting, ready if needed. Whether Maresca turns to his superstar from the start or unleashes him later might tell us plenty about how this new City era plans to manage its biggest weapon across a long, unforgiving season.
