Enrique Riquelme's Bold Plan for Real Madrid: Jürgen Klopp as Coach

The name was always going to detonate the campaign.

Jürgen Klopp. Real Madrid. An election promise with enough voltage to light up every sports desk in Spain.

On the eve of Sunday’s presidential vote, Enrique Riquelme’s candidacy dropped its bombshell: if he wins, his chosen man for the Bernabéu dugout is Klopp, handpicked by sporting director-in-waiting Raúl González Blanco. The plan, they said, was clear. Raúl would call the German coach on Monday the 8th “to personally explain the sporting project to him and show him the desire for him to lead it from the dugout”.

The wording of that statement was no off-the-cuff flourish. It was dissected, polished and agreed line by line. First drafted in English, then translated into Spanish, it carried the approval of Klopp’s agent, Marc Kosicke, who validated the text in writing. Every comma had a purpose.

Riquelme’s camp wanted to send a simple message: there is genuine interest, and formal talks will start only if the ballot boxes fall their way. Nothing more, nothing less. Klopp’s side had their own red line. They did not want to be dragged into an electoral circus or portrayed as having struck a secret pact with any candidate.

So the statement walked that tightrope. No pre-agreement, no hidden contract, no handshake in the shadows. Just a commitment to talk, if and when Riquelme is elected.

Then came the twist.

Comments from Kosicke to a German journalist began to circulate, presented as if they torpedoed the entire story. In those remarks, the agent essentially repeated what was already in the official text and voiced his frustration with the media pressure around Klopp’s name. Yet the tone was seized upon and repackaged as a flat denial.

Inside Riquelme’s team, the reaction was a mix of surprise and disbelief. They insist they have every exchange in writing. For them, nothing has changed: the understanding remains that, should Riquelme win, a meeting with Klopp is already set up. That is when the real negotiation would begin, calmly and in detail, far from microphones and campaign slogans.

The confusion around Kosicke’s comments has now prompted another move. According to reports, the agent has already contacted journalist Florian Plettenberg to clarify his statements and avoid misleading interpretations. The aim is to close the door on the idea that everything previously agreed and authorised for publication has suddenly vanished into thin air.

Behind the scenes, Riquelme’s project continues to lean heavily on history and prestige. They are convinced that Klopp appreciates the presence of legendary figures such as Vicente del Bosque, Iker Casillas, Fernando Hierro and Raúl himself within the structure they are putting forward. Raúl’s status in Germany, burnished since his spell at Schalke 04, is another card they believe carries weight in Klopp’s eyes.

Gratitude is a recurring word in the candidate’s camp when they speak about Klopp’s stance so far. They describe him as proactive, open to listening, and respectful of the process. That only deepens their confusion at the way Kosicke’s latest words have been framed in some quarters as a rejection.

For now, everything hangs on one simple condition: the ballot.

If Enrique Riquelme emerges from Sunday’s election as Real Madrid president, Raúl will pick up the phone on Monday. Only then will the club discover whether the idea of Klopp on the Bernabéu touchline is a fleeting campaign image or the first step in a radical new era.
