England Faces Late Reshuffle Ahead of Nations League

England have been forced into a late reshuffle, with five players withdrawing from Thomas Tuchel’s squad for the upcoming Nations League fixtures and two replacements drafted in.

Cole Palmer, Kobbie Mainoo, Marcus Rashford, Declan Rice and Tino Livramento have all pulled out, stripping England of quality and depth across the pitch just days before the squad meets up.

In their place, Everton midfielder James Garner and Nottingham Forest captain Morgan Gibbs-White have been called up and will link up with the group on Tuesday.

Injuries hit Tuchel’s plans

Palmer’s withdrawal will sting. The Chelsea forward had only just been recalled by Tuchel after his controversial omission from England’s World Cup squad, but a minor injury has cut short his return before a ball is kicked.

At Manchester United, Mainoo and Rashford were both taken off late in Sunday’s 1-1 draw at Fulham and assessed by club staff. Neither has been passed fit to report for international duty.

Rice’s absence removes one of Tuchel’s most trusted lieutenants. The Arsenal midfielder played the full 90 minutes in the Gunners’ 3-0 defeat by Brighton but will not be available for England this time.

Livramento also drops out. The Newcastle defender has been restricted to just three substitute appearances this season and will not feature in the Nations League squad.

Garner and Gibbs-White handed chance

Tuchel had already hinted that Gibbs-White was close. On Friday he admitted the 26-year-old was on the brink of the original selection, and the Forest playmaker, who has six caps, now gets his opening.

Garner’s route back is just as striking. The Everton midfielder made both of his senior England appearances in March but, like Gibbs-White, was overlooked for the 2026 World Cup. Now he returns at a moment of need, with a chance to force his way into Tuchel’s longer-term plans.

Injury problems have stripped England of some headline names. The door, though, has swung open for two midfielders desperate to prove they belong in this new era.
