Dan Neil Joins Rangers Revolution on Free Transfer
Rangers have won the race for Dan Neil, landing the Sunderland captain on a free and prising him away from a late move to Southampton in the process.
The 24-year-old midfielder has signed a three-year deal at Ibrox, becoming the club’s fifth summer recruit and the clearest signal yet of Derek McInnes’ intent to rebuild his side around proven, hungry leaders.
From South Shields to Ibrox
Neil is not a prospect. He arrives as a fully formed midfielder with scars, medals and 201 Sunderland appearances behind him.
Born in South Shields, he joined Sunderland’s Academy of Light as a nine-year-old in 2010 and climbed every rung of the ladder. By 16 he was making his senior debut. By his early twenties he was wearing the armband and dragging the club back to the Premier League.
He played a major role in Sunderland’s climb out of League One and then in the Championship, becoming a regular presence in midfield as the Black Cats fought their way back towards the top flight. He also lifted the EFL Trophy in 2021 and grew into one of the dressing room’s central figures.
The pinnacle came in 2024/25. As captain, Neil led Sunderland through the Championship play-offs and into a dramatic Wembley final, where Régis Le Bris’ side edged Sheffield United 2-1 to end an eight-year exile from the Premier League. Neil started 47 league games that season and chipped in with two goals, embodying the relentlessness Sunderland needed to get over the line.
Ipswich loan and a crossroads
The fairytale promotion did not bring guaranteed security. After helping Sunderland back into the Premier League, Neil struggled to nail down a regular place in the top-flight XI and headed out on loan to Ipswich Town for the second half of last season.
There, he slotted straight back into Championship life. He made 16 league appearances as the Tractor Boys surged to promotion of their own, adding another successful campaign to a CV already stacked with upward momentum.
By January it was clear he would leave Wearside when his contract expired. Rangers’ interest surfaced early, with the club tracking a player whose blend of energy, technique and leadership fit the profile McInnes wanted at the heart of his midfield.
Rangers’ late swoop
For a long time, the smart money had Neil heading to the south coast. Reports suggested Southampton were close to an agreement, and the move looked almost inevitable.
Then Rangers moved.
SunSport understands the Ibrox club stepped in at the 11th hour with an improved offer and a compelling pitch. The chance to play in front of a demanding fanbase, to compete for trophies, and to carry the expectation of a support that lives every result, tipped the balance.
Neil made it clear that pressure is exactly what he wants.
“It is a new chapter for myself, and I am really excited to be signing for Rangers. I’m really looking forward to what the next few years can bring,” he said.
“I have played for Sunderland for a number of years and the weight and expectation of the fans to win every week and the feeling of it making or breaking people’s weekends is something that drives me.
“I’ve spoken to many people who have been here, and they said it’s a very similar feeling, and as a character and a person that really drives me to give 110 per cent day in and day out, and I need that in my career.”
McInnes’ midfield general
McInnes, already busy reshaping his squad, did not hide his satisfaction at getting this one over the line.
“I’m absolutely delighted to welcome Dan to the club. He will be an excellent addition to our squad,” the manager said.
“He is a technically gifted midfielder who is strong in possession, can contribute goals and brings tremendous energy to the team.
“At 24, we are signing a player who is hungry and ambitious, but who already possesses significant experience and leadership qualities, having captained Sunderland to promotion to the Premier League in 2025.
“I’m really looking forward to working with Dan throughout pre-season as we prepare for the challenges ahead.”
Neil joins Lawrence Shankland, Ross McCrorie, Ben Godfrey and Ivor Pandur on the list of new arrivals, giving McInnes a spine built around domestic experience and a competitive edge.
A statement signing
Rangers underlined the scale of the capture in their own announcement, confirming the deal is subject to international clearance and highlighting Neil’s pedigree as a former England youth international and promotion-winning captain.
“Rangers can today announce the signing of midfielder Dan Neil on a three-year contract, subject to international clearance,” the club said.
“The 24-year-old former England youth international arrives at Ibrox after spending the second half of last season on loan with Ipswich Town from Sunderland, making 16 Championship appearances as the Tractor Boys secured promotion to the Premier League.
“Born in South Shields, Neil graduated from Sunderland’s Academy of Light and made 201 senior appearances for the club, scoring 12 goals, before becoming a free agent this summer.
“As captain, he led the Black Cats to the Premier League via the 2024/25 play-offs, wearing the armband as Régis Le Bris’ side celebrated a dramatic 2-1 victory over Sheffield United in the Wembley final.
“Neil made 47 league appearances and scored twice during that memorable campaign as Sunderland ended their eight-year absence from England’s top flight.”
From a nine-year-old in Sunderland’s academy to a promotion-winning captain, Neil has already lived one club’s revival. Now he walks into Ibrox, where the standards are just as high and the margin for error just as thin.
Rangers have not signed him to make up the numbers. They have signed him to shape what comes next.
