Crystal Palace Prepare for Historic UEFA Europa League Debut
Crystal Palace are set for a night they have waited their whole history for – and Pierre Sage might just have two of his sharpest weapons back in time for it.
The club’s first-ever UEFA Europa League tie arrives at Selhurst Park on Thursday, with Polish champions Lech Poznan the visitors for the league phase opener. The timing of the occasion could hardly be better for Ismaila Sarr and Eddie Nketiah.

Sarr, last season’s top scorer and the man Palace so often turned to for a spark, has not kicked a competitive ball this campaign after injury stalled his momentum. His absence has hung over the early weeks of the season.
Nketiah, by contrast, started the first three fixtures and then disappeared from the teamsheet, missing last week’s home games and leaving Sage short of proven firepower.
That picture has changed quickly.
Both forwards returned to full training earlier in the week and, speaking on the eve of the European debut, Sage made it clear they are pushing hard to be involved.
“He could be in the team tomorrow, as [could] Eddie Nketiah, because they started to train with us this week, and they are in shape,” the Palace manager said when asked about Sarr’s status.
The message was simple: they are back, they look sharp, and they are in his thoughts for matchday one.
Henderson out – but locked in
Not every headline around the squad concerned immediate availability.
Dean Henderson will not feature against Lech Poznan. The goalkeeper remains out, as does Jean-Philippe Mateta, with Sage targeting a return for both after the upcoming international break.
The setback on the teamsheet came with a significant off-field lift. Just before Sage faced the media, Palace announced that Henderson had signed a new long-term contract, tying the club captain to Selhurst Park until 2030.
“We are really happy for us, we are really happy for him – it's a long-term contract for our captain,” Sage said, underlining the keeper’s influence not only on matchdays but inside the dressing room.
The deal underpins the project. Henderson stays as the figurehead, even as he watches this historic night from the stands.
A historic European step
All of it feeds into a sense of momentum as Palace step onto the continental stage for the first time.
Squad reinforcements are edging back, their captain has committed his future, and Selhurst Park is braced for a European anthem under the lights. Lech Poznan arrive as seasoned campaigners in this arena; Palace arrive as newcomers desperate to prove they belong.
Sage knows what could tilt it. If Sarr and Nketiah are ready to join the fray, the Eagles gain the clinical edge they have missed. On a night like this, in front of a restless, expectant crowd, that might be the difference between a landmark appearance and a statement start to their Europa League journey.
