Coventry City: Thomas Sees Hope After Man City Defeat
Bobby Thomas walked out of the Etihad with nothing to show on the scoreboard, but not with his head down.
Coventry City’s 1-0 defeat at Manchester City left them still pointless after three Premier League games, yet the defender believes this was the afternoon when Frank Lampard’s side finally found something solid to cling to.
“This was a great starting point,” Thomas told BBC CWR, adamant that the performance, if not the result, marked a shift for the newly promoted Sky Blues.
They had arrived in Manchester on the back of two bruising lessons: an opening defeat at Arsenal and a home loss to Hull City. Both underlined the gulf they must bridge at this level. At the Etihad, though, the pattern changed.
“We approached the game differently and had a better gameplan,” Thomas said. “We executed it really well and were unfortunate not to come away with a point.”
The tweak was clear. Coventry adjusted their shape, tightened the gaps and showed far more clarity without the ball. Thomas pointed to that tactical shift as a key reason for their improvement.
“You can see the formation change yourselves and we were more diligent in the roles everyone took on during the game,” he explained. “We approached it a lot better.”
The table tells a harsher story. Three games, zero points. No dressing that up.
“Three games, zero points is not great,” Thomas admitted, before quickly turning back to the bigger picture. “But this was a great starting point. We can kick on and start getting some points from now.”
It has been a brutal welcome back to the top flight: Arsenal away, Manchester City away, and a home defeat that stung. Thomas knows that run cannot become an excuse.
“We’ve had Arsenal and Manchester City away, which has been a challenge, but we have to relish it and really take on these teams,” he said.
That, for him, is non-negotiable. Coventry cannot tiptoe into Premier League grounds and hope to survive.
“We can’t come to any places and be timid and not give 100%,” he insisted. “We have to be all-in on everything we are doing.”
The message is clear. The performance at Manchester City cannot stand alone as an honourable near-miss. It has to be a launchpad.
“We need to get after it and start getting some points now,” Thomas said.
The Sky Blues have their marker. The question is whether this “starting point” becomes the day their season truly began, or just another brave story from a team still waiting to land a punch.
