Cole Palmer Withdraws from England Squad Due to Minor Injury

Cole Palmer’s return to the England fold is over before it even began.

The Chelsea forward is set to withdraw from Thomas Tuchel’s squad for the upcoming Nations League fixtures because of a minor injury, cutting short what was shaping up to be a statement international window for the 24-year-old.

Recalled after World Cup Snub

Palmer’s inclusion had already carried a sharp edge. Left out of the Three Lions’ World Cup squad in controversial fashion, he was brought back by Tuchel with a clear challenge ringing in his ears.

Tuchel had said Palmer had a “point to prove” and needed “to step up” to “keep his shirt and justify the nomination”. This break was supposed to be his chance to do exactly that.

Instead, he will now miss an extended international schedule in which England are due to play four times.

England’s Nations League Run

England open against World Cup winners Spain at Wembley on Saturday, 26 September, a fixture that was likely to test Palmer’s creativity and nerve on the biggest stage. After that, Tuchel’s side travel to the Czech Republic on 29 September and Croatia on 3 October, before returning home to host the Czechs again on 6 October.

Palmer will watch it all from the sidelines.

Club Form and Heavy Workload

The timing underlines how hard he has been pushed early in the season. His withdrawal comes just a day after he played the full 90 minutes in Chelsea’s 3-0 defeat at Brentford on Friday.

Following a summer off after missing out on the World Cup, Palmer has been central to Chelsea’s start. He has started six of their seven games, completed the full match in five of them, scored four goals and supplied two assists. Tuchel wanted him sharper, more decisive, more dominant. On club duty, Palmer has responded.

But the workload has a cost.

Injury History Lingers

Palmer has a history here. He was hampered by a recurring groin injury during the 2025-26 season, a problem that frustrated then-Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca, now in charge at Manchester City. Maresca publicly questioned the nature of the issue at the time, saying it did not make sense.

That groin trouble hangs over every sprint, every minute added to his schedule. Even if this latest problem is described as minor, England and Chelsea both know how quickly “minor” can turn into “persistent”.

International Pause Continues

Palmer’s last appearance for England came in March, in a 1-0 friendly defeat by Japan. That outing was supposed to be a step towards a more regular role. Instead, the wait goes on.

He will return to his club to recover, his England story stalled again. The question now is simple and unforgiving: when the next international window comes around, will Palmer finally be fit enough — and trusted enough — to turn promise into permanence?
